What is your favorite Japanese made shred guitar from the late 80's-early 90's time period? Candidates include but not limited to Ibanez, Charvel, Jackson (not American made Jackson), ESP, Fender HM Srat, etc

That's a good one. I like the Fender HEAVY METAL STRAT, The Jackson or Charvel Fusion, and The Charvel Model 6.

I never played any of those but the heavy metal strat looks really cool.
I'm going to get a RG550 soon. Very soon hopefully.

Those are both beautiful looking guitars! How did you lose them to your ex? Did she play guitar? Was it part of your divorce settlement that she got your guitars? That sounds like a strange arrangement especially if she didn't even play guitar. I'm sorry you lost them That's a damn shame. Was there a guitar that you did get to keep? If so, what kind was it? What kind of amp did you have back then when you had the Kramer Flying V? BTW, for those that don't know what a Charvel Model 6 is, it's a neck through body design, it has a rosewood fretboard with mother of pearl shark fin inlays on the frets and it has active pickups. They originally came with active pickups made by Jackson but the one I have was upgraded. The Jackson pickups were replaced with EMGs. It's the only neck through body guitar I have and also the only guitar with active pickups that I have. I have a Jackson Fusion that has some very high output pickups though. My Model 6 my Jackson Fusion and my the three Heavy Metal Strats are my favorite guitars I have. Of the HM Strats one is white, one is black sparkle, and one is burgundy with black marbling and a maple fretboard. That one is one that I got for Christmas of 1989 brand new. That was my first professional quality guitar and it completed my set-up since I already had a Marshall 100 watt JCM800 half stack with channel switching and reverb.

If you have some old Guitar For The Practicing Musician magazines you probably have the ad for it which features Greg Howe playing the Fender Heavy Metal Strat.

No, it wasn't part of the divorce.. it was not long before, thou, lol! I went to visit some family.. back east and while I was gone she sold off all my gear... 12 guitars.. my half stack that was specially wired... and pedals She wouldn't tell me were she sold them. I checked all pawn shops around a 3 city area and no luck... Thinking back She might have taken them down to Denver... but, way, way to late to do anything about it now :/

The 550, particularly from 87 to 91. Just picked up a beat up one recently (neck perfect - body was a little customised) and since then my other axes have been feeling neglected. You can pick them up for under 500 and as a bonus many of the older ones have had the pickups changed out, so you usually get a decent set of pickups. I scored an Evo neck and Nailbomb bridge in mine. They're a great axe with a great trem.
