I'm wondering what you guys use for strings.
I typically use Dean Markley Blue Steels. I really like them. They seem to settle pretty fast, hold a good intonation and have a fairly long life.
Recently, I tried going on the cheap and bought Ernie Balls so I could order x amounts of each kind of string (E's, A's, D, etc.). I'm starting to wonder if this was a mistake. Over a week and a half later, the strings still seem to be stretching out. I had to re-strobe my guitar and I can't get the low E right. It's sharp on the intonation and I have the bridge piece pulled back as far as it will go.

I've played with many different brands and gauges during all the years I've played but the last two or three years I've been using D'Addario 10-46 for standard tuning and 60 or 64 for the low B on 7-strings, depending on the guitar and pickup.

D' Addario 10's like Blue says. I have been using them for ages. Once in a while I'll try something else just to see what it is about the D'Addario's and it is just so clear instantly. They last longer and sound better.

9-46... not very fuzzy about brand... though Dean Marklys signature string seems to unwrap at ballend so I can't use those on guitars without FR. On FR guitars it's obvious no problem as the ballends are cut of anyway. Most of my strings I buy are noname from a site called stringsite.com, when I buy 48 sets I pay about a forth of what D'addarios cost. That way I can afford to keep my collection playable. And they sounds fine to me...

Thanks guys for your opinions. I'm might have tried D'Addario's a long time ago, but it could be worth my while to try them again since Zzounds has them for 3.95 and Blue Steels for 4.45. They also have 10 packs of D'Addario's for 29.95.
Blondie, what brand of Markley's did you try? I've used Blue Steels for well over a decade and I never had a problem with unraveling. I have a Floyd and have to cut the ball too. The only problem I had was it breaking by the bridge, but I think every string would break by the bridge eventually especially with the use of the whammy and/or when the bridge pieces get grooves cut into them.
I remember a long time ago I used GHS Boomers. They are worse than Ernie's. GHS's never stayed in tune and I ended up putting my old worn out Markley's back on.

Sorry man, my misunderstanding. I need to read and comprehend better. Thanks for the advice on the stringsite.com. By the way, did you ever compare the Markley signature series to Blue Steels? I'm curious what you may have found.

No never compare them. haven't tried blue steels in 100 years or so, but remember that when I tried them I snapped a string almost on first stroke, never bought them again... back in the early / mid nineties i like SIT strings but they have always been pretty expensive, at leats here in DK, have mostly used d'addarios.

Dude, I only thought you strummed with strings made from high-tensile pink cotton candy (pink steel) ? ;D Welcome back Blondie

You must have gotten a bum string. I've had very good luck with blue steels, but I'm looking for cheaper but still high quality alternatives. Besides that, I like to experiment every once in a great while. It helps me to hear what others have to say. Can't say I've tried SIT's. There is a definite majority opinion in favor of d'addarios. I see that SIT and d'addarios have a similar architecture to their cores with the hexagonal shape; I wonder what that does as opposed to a round core.

This goes to show that everybody's playing styles are different along with differences in their guitars. I tried Ernie's and couldn't keep them in tune for the life of me and this was after 2 weeks. I am meticulous about putting my strings on; I make sure they wrap around the post tight and neat so I think I minimized the slipping at the tuners. Besides the locking nut should have eliminated that problem. Out of curiosity, what do you drop tune to and is it standard tuning? I drop tune to Eb and standard tuning for singing purposes mainly, but I like the slightly darker tone too.

Do those strings have some kind of polymer coating? I knew a guy who used Elixirs on his acoustic. He swore by them. How do they sound on pinch harmonics?

I've used em issue-free for 10 years now! I drop to all kinds of tunings. D-standard all the way to drop B and everything in between. For Eb I still use my 9-42's.
