Here is some solid state amps for your price: Peavey Bandit 112 Or tube: The Peavey Valveking 212 they aren't the best tube amp but they are pretty loud and will do great metal and hard rock Maybe the Fender Twin.

Hehe I doubt he want a Fender Twin if he wants to play metal. It would be loud enought tho.
I think it's hard to find a quality tube amp for metal in that pricerange. Look on the used market. Peavey 5150 is the *** for metal and it's cheap.

I bought a Line 6 Spider Jam 75w in November. Pretty damn loud if you turn it up; I Don't dare turn it up on max. And can be set for Metal shredding, Blues, Twang, Clean and many other settings! Best thing about this amp is that it comes with Pre recorded tracks/drums that you can jam along with as a backtrack. It also comes with built in looping/recording! Their is no feedback whatsoever and highly customizable. There are different sound effects that come with it like, Sweep Echo, Phaser, Chorus Flange, Tape Echo, and many more! I got it for only $360 US at Guitar Center. Great price for a great amp! Very happy with this amp, and highly recommended for any guitarists that are looking to have a great time!

If you have a PC setup, i.e. a line 6 pod you can go from you PC into the board, If not ebays a good deal. I would look for great sound as opposed to power at this point and plug into the PA if you have one

I have a Peavey Vypyr 75. I'd say almost any amp has enough power for practice! As for gigging, depends on the size of the gig haha.
Anyway, the amp is pretty awesome. When I cba with my pedals I just use the effects on it which are decent. It's versatile too, enough gain to play anything metal IMO.
