Happy Birthday Randy Rhoads. Does anyone have any memories about Rhoads? Like any live shows, etc? Sad to say my biggest memory of Randy was the day he died because it happened so close to my home (Ozzy was just starting to really make headlines with his new band in this time period) I remember they were supposed to do show near by (central Florida) and as we all know that never happened I never got the chance to see him perform live. Yeah I remember it being a real big deal back then, and even more shocking when the truth and details came to be known on how things played out that fateful day…. tragic loss I won't forget that day. Still to this day I have never seen Ozzy live, to me it will never be the OZZY band I remember without RANDY It's hard FOR ME at least to listen to any Ozzy albums, songs without RANDY…..Painful.

I was born in the 90s sadly (WORST decade for metal), and I really wished I could of seen Randy live. Ozzy wouldn't be the Ozzy we know today if it wasn't for Randy Rhoads, and many guitar players (like myself) wouldn't be around because of the lack of influence (just my opinion). His second to last show was performed in my hometown (Atlanta Georgia).

Not all of the 90s were bad for metal. The 90's had Metallica's biggest selling album ever - their black album. The 90's saw Guns 'n'Roses release their double albums masterpiece - Use Your Illusion I and II. The 90's saw Ozzy's career make a resurgence after the relatively weak period of his career with Jake E. Lee when he replaced Jake with a skinny young kid with long blonde hair known as Zakk Wylde. The first time I heard Miracle Man on the radio I knew Ozzy had somebody impressive. Then Zakk started Pride and Glory and then Black Label Society which really allowed Zakk to show off his musical abilities. Meanwhile down in the Texas and Lousiana area a juggernaut was just beginning to take flight - Pantera! They pioneered a whole new style of metal with Phil Anselmo as their frontman and Dimebad Darrell on guitar ripping and shredding up a storm on his solos while locking into tight "power grooves" when playing rhythm guitar. Megadeth continued to release some off the best albums of their career as well. Progressive metal saw long time heavy metal favorites Savatage become much more progressive and better than ever with Gutter Ballet, Streets Edge Of Thorns, and so on while Dream Theater, Opeth, and Tool really made big names for themselves. The 90's were the last decade to show the emergence of true NEW LEGENDS OF ROCK both in Pantera and Black Label Society while hard rock - not heavy metal per se but definitely bands with lots guitar loud and upfront in the mix, varing in degrees of heaviness from the Sabbath inspired heavy sludge of Soundgarden to the also Sabbath inspired Alice In Chains release classics like "Man In the Box", "Them Bones", "DIRT", Rooster, Down In A Hole, and the haunting "Would." Meanwhile in Seattle a band named Pearl Jam became a phenomenon, being played on the radio every hour on songs like "EvenFlow", Alive", and "Black." Of course this list wouldn't be complete with the biggest stars of the Seattle scene of all - Nirvana being included. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" started getting played just on radio's"alternative hour" but quickly there were such massive numbers of requests for the heavy but different kind of heavy song that radio was forced to put it into heavy rotation - all day and all night 24/7. Since the end of the 90's can you really name the emergence of new rock icons that are as huge icons as Pantera, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, or Nirvana? Can you name the emergence in the 2000s of rock guitar heroes as big as Zakk Wylde and Dimebag Darrell became in the 90's?
