Hi Michael,
I'm including this video so I can point out exactly what my question is about:
My question is about what he is doing at about 20 seconds into the video. He's playing a downstroke one one string, then an upstroke on the next higher string, and then repeats. My question is, in your opinion is it possible to be able to play that two note lick at a fairly high speed of say 16th notes at 200 bpm? I find that when I try to reach a decent speed on that lick, I fail to clear the string that the 2nd note is on, so I end up making the pick bump into the string on an unintentional downstroke instead of clearing the string so I can hit the string on an upstroke.
No matter what I do, when I try to play this fast, the pick starts failing to successfully clear the string the second note is on. I guess it's because the action of making the pick move upwards and across instead of just across takes longer, and I start to move across without any upward motion to clear the string.
Has this ever happened to you? Should a virtuoso shred player be able to play this lick at at least 16th notes at 200 bpm, or is it impossible because of the frequent string changes?
If there's any way you could give me some advice on how to stop accidentally failing to clear the string the second note is on so that I hit it with an unintentional downstroke (like a mini-sweep) as well as giving more some advice on how to clear the string the second note is on with the pick so that I can pick it with an upstroke and still play this lick very fast I would greatly appreciate it!
Thank you!
