Do any of you ever go to see The Trans-Siberian Orchestra play when they are in or near your town? What do you think of them overall?

Yeah, I saw them in concert in Tampa once, it was awesome! Their entire show has an insane synchronized laser, screen and pyrotechnic spectacle that goes with it. The pyrotechnics were so hot you could even feel the heat up in high seating. They also had wireless units and they had a long runway on the stage. And I saw the guitarist using a MAB-1 Armorflame which was really cool. They had Joe Walsh as a surprise guest which was cool too.

The pyrotechnics and lasers and other special effects are nice but I wonder how popular they'd be if they didn't have any of that and just played music! As you know, TSO is the band that was created by taking Savatage and then using those musicians (as their performers and main writers) to play more commercial music that isn't heavy metal or rebellious rock 'n roll. Many Savatage fans including me are upset by the way TSO producer Paul O'Neill bougt his way into having creative control over Savatage and eventually pulling the plug on Savatage to solely concentrate on TSO. Savatage never gad the kind of budget and special effects such as the laser show that TSO has. If Savatage had the stage show TSO has, and TSO had the stage show Savatage had, you'd see a much bigger increase in popularity for Savatage and a big decline in popularity for TSO. Jon Oliva along with his late brother Criss Oliva were the founders and creative forces behind Savatage. They were dedicated exclusively to heavy metal.
While I'm glad hat TSO has allowed the Savatage guys to secure their financial futures, that has already been accomplished. It's time that Paul O'Neill always Jon Oliva and the rest of Savatage to do what they do best - heavy metal (where their roots and their hearts are). Enough of this novelty orchestra playing Christmas music and playing some of the Savatage songs re-arranged for TSO in the TSO sets and presenting them as TSO songs! A heavy metal guitar virtuoso like Criss Oliva didn't bust his as learning to become the best guitarist he could play Christmas music for children and their parents. I fear that with the way Savatage is never even spoken of in the same sentence as TSO despite the fact that their biggest hit song is directly from a Savatage album - same arrangement and everything, that Criss Oliva must be rolling over in his grave with the way Paul O'Neill has watered down, prostituted and bastardized Savatage all for the almighty dollar. What ever happened to integrity?

They come closer to outright plagiarism of classical music composers than anyone I know of. Their songs which they present as TSO "originals" are often the result of taking a composition by, say Mozart, for example, and then adding some "rock guitar parts" in between the Mozart melodies. Their biggest hit single is nothing more than "Carol Of The Bells" with a few high velocity scale runs thrown in. If they had to rely on their own ideas for their songs without copying melodies from the legendary classical composers and then changing the names of the original pieces to present them as TSO originals, I don't think they'd even be in business. As it is, they are one of the top 10 highest grossing touring bands in the world.
