The Record Industry Is dying and almost dead. What made to possible for hard rock and heavy metal to become huge were all the great rock clubs in Hollywood and in the other big cities of The USA. Now almost all the great clubs have closed so even of someone has a great band, there are very few places left to play. That's because the record industry is dying and almost dead. It used to be that the record companies would send talent scouts to these legendary clubs and sign new talent. Now most pf the record companies have gone bankrupt since the early 90s and the ones that are left have no money to spend on artist development for bands. Without artist development it's unlikely that even the legends like Van Halen, Motley Crue and Guns 'n Roses would have ever reached the level of success they did. Who is to blame for the destruction of the music industry and ultimately the death of rock 'n roll? The internet is to blame. The bankruptcies of most record companies, the closing of most of the legendary rock nightclubs, and the resulting lack of new stars in rock music all coincides exactly with the proliferation of the internet. When the internet became something that was commonplace in typical homes in America and across the world, and free downloading via sites such as Napster and Kazaa proliferated, that was the beginning of the end for rock 'n roll.
Something has to be done about the massive destruction the internet is causing to the music industry. If nothing is done, the damage won't stop at the destruction of the music industry. You've already seen the closing of almost all bookstores. This is just the beginning. If the younger generations don't wake up and realize what the internet is doing and then take steps to stop the damage the internet is doing, the internet will be the ruination of our entire culture.
The biggest nard rock/heavy metal bands today are the same bands that were the biggest bands in the 1980s! That should tell you something is drastically wrong. There are lots of rock stars dying and many more who are old, in poor health, or even dying. What young bands today do you see poised to take the place of bands like The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Van Halen,KISS, Motley Crue, Metallica, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Guns 'n' Roses? Think long and hard on that.
There is no justification for the MP3 being legal. When you compare the good the MP3 has dome to the bad the MP3 has done, including the facilitation of illegal downloading, there is no contest! It's an invention that made it very easy to illegally download songs and even entire albums. It should be made illegal. That isn't the entire solution to bringing the music industry back to a state of health, productivity and prosperity but it's the first step on the way to accomplishing that goal.
