Is this thread dead? Hope not... Naah, this thread will never die..... it will just sleep from time to time! ;D Hey Willjay... just wanted to ask if you'd check out the solo from Splendido Sundance (DiMeola). It's got an amazing acoustic run... and I've been wondering for some time how fast it's being played. I don't want to bet that it's faster than his live average... because apparantly my ear is biased (I would have thought surely he was faster than McLaughlin even if his lines were less complex). Anyway... hope you have a chance to check it out. I'd sure appreciate the analysis. Do you mean the studio version, or a live version?? ... and at exactly which point is the picked run you would like me to clock?? .. cheers! Oh, and trust me, i've clocked so many live fast picking clips from both of them, and the reason Al DiMeola may sound at times quicker/more accurate than John McLaughlin is because he heavily mutes the notes he is picking ("Mutola" picking ;D). Thanks! WJ.

Yowza, Toni's fast. Sounded off-tempo at a few SHORT points.

Don't trust that, i'm pretty darn certain he's not "Strictly Alternate Picking" every note at the fastest speed... even at the second fastest speed i'm pretty sure he economy picks some of the crossovers. Though i can't slow it down yet because it won't let me download it yet, from this site : javimoya.com/blog/youtube_en.php i'll keep trying to download it, then when i can i'll convert it to WMV (so anyone can slow it down in Windows Media Player), and i'll upload it here for you all to download. WJ.

It doesn't sound that good, but he says 190bpm & is attempting 6's (if that's the right vid).

OK... it finally let me download it.. i converted it to WMV...and uploaded it here for you guys to download. When you have downloaded it, slow it down yourself in Windows Media Player (click on the button at the top left of Media Player, just below where it says "Now Playing", then click on "Enhancements", then click on "Play Speed Setting"... which will allow you to slow the track/video down or speed it up.) d.turboupload.com/d/1224823/Toni_Lloret_-_Alternate_Picking_-_Basic_Speed_.WMV.htmlIf you watch carefully in slowed down mode, you can see that between the second fastest speed he does, and the fastest he does at the very end, his picking hand doesn't actually speed up any more, he still picks arund the same speed, but just slurrs/messes his way through the fingered notes at the last part of the clip. Watch it slowed down, but with the sound off, then watch the speed of his picking hand, he is still picking the same speed (up/down motions) but he just fingers the notes more quickly. Like i said, don't trust everything people claim about speed on the net (unless it's me ;D). WJ.

Do you mean the studio version, or a live version?? ... and at exactly which point is the picked run you would like me to clock?? .. cheers! Thanks for the quick reply... I was referring to the studio version. There's a few quick sections in the solo, but I'm specifically referring to the last run in his solo before he plays the melody at approximately 4:30. Thanks again... I'm anxious to hear the results.

How comes only 17nps, not 18.4nps Willie if the metronome is on 184bpm?
Is it just he doesn't pick every note?
I'd put him in the top 3 alive with Mike & J-Mc & top 4 with Lane.

It works out just over 5.5 notes per click he's doing then other than 6.
He does stutter a few times, it aint an easy speed to do alt picked!
Stump does about that ECONOMY picked.
BTW- I've changed the Lane speed on my You Tube profile to 19nps instead of 18nps.

One of the 16 NPS licks from Todd Duane you included in your "NPS project" Willjay is one of the sickest licks i've heard, incredibly fast and CLEAN, you can really hear every single note so clear.

Hey Willjay... thanks for checking Splendido out. That's always been an impressive line and I've wondered. I suppose the math doesn't lie. One of these days I'll have to send a clip of my own on acoustic... I'm just about up to 170bmp... but 184 (Todd Duane ) on acoustic is just outrageous. Incidentally.. I'd love for you to check out another amazing guitarrist. He's from the McLaughlin, DiMeola school.. and been around for ages: Jorge Strunz. I'll see if I can find some good clips to recommend. Take it easy...

Watching carefully the vid by Tony Lloret (hey he's catalan like me and David Valdes, don't be so cruel), i alsoo see that he's pretty messy at his two fastest sections, but even slowing it down as willie recommended i see that the he's not strict alt picking thing isn't as clear to me. I've watched the whole picking motion many times right now and he ends his picking most of the time just in the exact period-time he does when he plays it very slow and strict alternate picking: for example, if it should be up when he played it slow, he still picks up at a faster tempo. May be he doesn't every time when picking the repeated pattern, but he does it many times.
Still sloppy though.

Take it easy... "Tuni Revival" on this forum is a huge Strunz & Farah fan. Well, incidently Todd is only playing 6's @ 170bpm, not 184bpm with 17nps lick. With the 15nps, he's doing almost 5 per beat equivalent of.
