I just ripped/uploaded John McLaughlin, Al DiMeola, and Paco DeLucia's solo spot's from the unreleased "Friday Night in San Francisco" gig. I'd love to have been there myself... it's a shame this amazing gig was never officially released on video, but only on cd, and even then they only released about 5 songs from it, even though there was actually a few hours worth of great concert footage (there's also the big conspiracy about why Columbia records mixed it with John's guitar waay down in the mix, and Al's way up, to try and make Al the star of the show since they had dissagreements with John at the time......) John McLaughlin's Solo Spot : Al DiMeola's Solo Spot : Paco DeLucia's Solo Spot : Enjoy! Willie J.

Humm in fact there are more minutes in John's solo spot than in Al's. Have you edited the one by al cause it was too long for the reason you mentioned Willie?
Still ***ing impressive.

Hey the last minute on Al's video, wasn't it the moto perpetuo by Paganini?
Edit: Pardon the 5th caprice.

Out of the 3 players, it's John>Al>Paco for me. I suppose it may depend on the performance in question, but overall i'd certainly put John at the top.

Nice avatar Willjay! That kid is fun to watch in the Vai video. ;D I got to hang out with him for a bit just before i moved down here. I think the last time i spoke with him was on his 18th birthday when i rang him up to wish him a happy birthday, then went on to embarress myself by playing "Happy Birthday" to him over the phone through an amp on my Paul Gilbert model Ibanez. You guys would just die if you walked into his bedroom and saw all the amazing guitars he has (or had), and i mean expensive ones, and i even recognised a few famous guitars in his room.... one of Steve Vai's 3 "Flame" shaped guitars was right there in front of me, i think it had no strings on..... also, Vai gave him some other guitars too, including at least one Jem. He has (or had) a staircase leading from his bedroom up into a converted attic, which he had as a practice room/recording studio (lucky git), with a few more guitars up there (and a collection of basktball videos.... he loved basketball, that's how i first met him, on the court). In his living room he had a framed golden cassette thingy that Vai sent him... but Vai spelt his name wrong on it, hehe, don't tell Vai. Thomas (McRocklin, real name McLaughlin) gave me a copy of his cd (not the Bad4Good cd, but a collection of things he had recorded from the age of 11 to 17). WJ.

Well in those vids you can't compare easily. Specially when Maclaughlin's solo is almost 10 minutes long and Paco's just the half. That's for the technical aspect, for the piece choice, Paco's piece was the best; it has dynamics you cannot see in John's and Al's one (for exemple in the arpeggios Paco plays, simply incredible fluent and vast). Anyways, when you watch the whole Trio vids you can see how ***ing versatile is Paco's playing. Much more than Al's specially.

I meant John>Al>Paco over everything i've ever heard from all 3, not just the solos
Dynamics are easier to do with fingers than a pick though, but as musicians Joh is the best for me. Plus he's english! So there Von, in your spanish face!

Dynamics with a pick isn't that hard. It makes for great solos.

No it isn't hard, but for example with your fingers (if you have long nails of course) you can use the flesh part for softer parts, even relatively fast. Maybe not Paco speed, but he is the equivalent of Lane with his fingers. A guy who worked in a guitar shop i went in a few times was pretty good with that tye of playing (flesh & nail stuff).

You mean this rivera about flesh?
I was searching for a vid with a good resolution to see how impressive Paco's right hand is, and here is the proof. Amazing. It's like that Kung-Fu quote: you've died three times before your feet touched the floor.

Von are you "Franky230" who said Paco is the Ronaldinho of guitar?
Yeah just using the fleshy part to get a softer sound on the string.
