Hello Michael I hope that recording is going well, and I hope you will answer this question. What do you think of Michael Romeo's playing? The Dark Chapter has always seemed to me to have part remniscent of your work. You thank him on your Christmas cd liner and he thanks you on his Twilight in Olympus liner. Have you ever talked about doing something together. In my opinion, you two (Stephan Forte might be the third) are the most musical of the "super shredders." A G3 with MJR, Stephan Forte, and you would absolutely rule!

I met Michael Romeo when I first released "No Boundaries". We kept in touch and he sent me the Symphony X CD you mentioned. He told me he had studied my "Star Licks" instructional video and it had made a huge impact on him and his playing. I think he is a great guitarist. We also get along well personally so a collaboration with him could possibly happen.

I dont like Van Halen. He was a show-man, not a guitarist..I mean he's a great player. But He never played with any feeling..And you have to to be good to me.. I can't decide if you're being serious or not. Eddie Van Halen, no feeling? There's more than one feeling y'know... I've never heard rock music that screams "PARTY!" nearly as much as Van Halen! And nobody can knock his talents as a songwriter either.

Van Halen is a good guitarist. He may be a show man but isn't that better than being boring?

I don't think he's a showman... he's a musician with a great ability to entertain visually as well as with his music. Would you call Michael a showman, who arguably has more 'useless' stage tricks than EVH? I think not. Showmanship is an essential part of being a successful performing musician in the rock market.

Michael is amazing..He can shred faster than anyone but can write some of the best melodies I've ever heard. I admit EVH wrote some killer riffs but when it comes to leads, I cant recall one that actually went with the song. To me, If a week after I hear the song, I can still hum the lead, its a good lead. With Halen I cant..

I have one question - why do you think you're so fast?
Do you think it's gentics, or a science in you muscular build that allows you to be so fast, or was it purely 100% practice? Essentially, I want to learn if people who shred on guitars have to be born with a gift.
Also, if anyone here know the science behind having great guitar abilities, can you give me a general idea of it?

Its all 100% practice, Michael has practiced very long periods a day for years to get to the skill level he's at now, and as he says "Practice Practice Practice" which is the best advice i've ever been given ;D

Hi Mike, I was wondering, are you fully ambidextrous, like being capable of playing speed kills on a lefty guitar??
I was wondering, cause I´m some ambidextrous, but the difference between my right handed playing and left handed playing still radical. I´ve been trying to become ambidextrous since four months ago. I´d say I´m about 40 percent ambidextrous right now. Should I keep trying or ambidextrous capabilities have to be natural?
Thanks for your time Mike!

Michael is naturally left handed. He taught himself to be ambidextrous and perfected the skill through many hours of practice. So in answer to your question, yes! you should keep working on it!

Basically, if you have passion for the instrument. Want to play it 24 hrs a day. And would play just for the sake of playing.
Really know how to practice. Taking it slow at first, then speeding up.
Know how to play from the heart. Then you can become great. And only then. There no short cuts on this instrument. You need to put the time in.

Hi Michael, I have 2 questions for you:
1) The new album which is advertised on the front of angelo.com sounds pretty cool. I was just wondering what to expect from this. I see Jim Gillette is performing on it. Will this mean that all the tracks will have vocals or will he just be making a sort of guest appearance? I really think you two guys work perfectly together. What should we expect from this album in terms of style etc?
2) I had a listen through your sound files on the angelo.com site and listened to the Freight Train one. I notice that this is a lot different from the Freight Train I have on my version of O.F.R. How come this is? How come two different versions of the track exist? Are they just two different studio takes?
I understand that these aren't really technical questions, sorry.
Thanks a lot Mike and keep shredding!

I do believe Mike uses Dunlop Jazz III's.
I use them too and they are very good for fast picking.

Michael practices in all the spare time he gets and before he got to where he is now he used to practice hours an hours a day and a quote from 'Speed Kills Revisited' "People always ask me "how many notes can you play a minute!?" I don't care." Also Michael is away at the Winter NAMM show at the moment
