what effects should I buy to make me sound faster than I can play.? I have a squier strat, and a peavey rage and have been playing for 2 months. I want to play as fast as MAB. any tips.
Someone told me to pick up and down, but I don't know what that is or how to do it.

Well, I think it's better to start with some easier stuff man, why would you like to play like Mike with just 2 months of experience? Don't rush man, start working on your technique if you want to shred and enjoy the time you spend on learning . Start playing rhythm stuff first (Nirvana worked for me ). If you think you're ready for it, take the next step to some harder stuff. And about the sound...just be happy with the sound you have now, it's better to work on technique first, there's no use in playing on expensive stuff if you can't even play guitar properly... And if you wanna know the 'up and down' stuff, get one of Mike's DVD's ;D

You don't want effects to try an make you sound faster. It takes lots practice to achive such skills like Michael Angelo i suggest working on the basics an working your way to achive your desired speed.

The best players are the ones who can plug into a totally clean amp and kick ass all over the place, good examples being Shawn Lane and Michael Angelo. If you use effects to sound fast instead of practicing, you'll never become a good player. My advice is to practice, practice, practice. That's it, it's the only way to become a better player.

Yeah, I have a string dampener (which I love) but I practice (practice, practice) without it so I can be able to pick up any guitar anywhere and start sweeping and shredding. Adam

Speed is all in your mind, fingers and picking technique, there's no replacement for that. As far as building your speed up, I agree with Neoclasiccl on using a metronome. It proves very effective if you use it correctly. Note - NEVER focus on speed over playing cleanly. Especially when you're starting out, it is much more important to play your chops cleanly than quickly.

Really work on your technique, you won't regret it. But for some excellent tips and things, get Michael Angelo's Speed Kills. I only got it yesterday and already i've learnt alot about alternative picking and String skipping and i've been playing 8 years, so there is something for every one on the DVD.

I think you should work with clean.... and when you are fast with clean, put it into overdrive and ROCK ON !

I think you should work with clean.... and when you are fast with clean, put it into overdrive and ROCK ON ! Yip, I agree, there's a lot of shredders out there who only can play with a big overdrive, but can't play with a clean sound.
