I am 14 years old, i have been playing for about 2 years, but im not that great of a guitar player. im not complete crap, i know pentatonics and can improvise solos, but i just cant play like Michael Angelo does. How? i mean, i have heard people like yngwie malmsteen and stuff, but there nothing compared to michael angelo, in the video he plays those songs with ease. im blown away right now! can someone(or michael ;D) please tell me what i should practice in order to develop speed like that?
and also, i was wondering if taking lessons are a good idea, my freinds tell me not to because then i will become a copy of the teacher, and i wont have my own original style.

Your friends are full of ***, its probably easier to become a "copy" without a teacher, teacher could easily point something like that out to you. I would invest in Mikes Speed Kills DVD as far as speed exercises, do everything slow and w/ a metronome, and then slowly work it up.

The speed Kills DVD is an excellent start. My speed has greatly increased in the last 2 months working on the speed kills exercises. I still have a long, long, long way to go to get anyware near MAB speed.
But it's a great teaching tool!

Ive taught myself and will continue to teach myseflt. I would never pay for lessons on practical (perhaps on advanced theory in the future maybe) but never practical. Just my two cents. Good louck.
Also, play the chromatic scales as fats but cleanly as you can. That helps build up speed.

I agree with the guys who are pimping Mike's DVD ;D - I got just speed kills a week or so ago and honestly I can already notice a huge improvement having done the first few exercises for 2 or 3 hours each day. Very good investment.

big thing im missing here. even when your practising. try to MAKE stuff by yourself. i learned allot of that. mayby it's because i play piano i don;t know, but i think it should help for everyone. cause ok, you know al the speed kills exercises. and then what ? you can't come up with things by your elf. michael says also inthe speed kills dvd that u can use the exercises to make stuff for yourself. big thing is theory. What are you playing ? if your gonna improvise in what key should u be in ? why is there 1 note between the G and the A ? theory is important to make stuff for yourself. AND DON'T TRY TO BE THE FASTEST, MELODY IS VERRY, VERRY IMPORTANT !!! . .and ofcourse practice to. Amen

My teacher plays mostly jazz, which is cool because I learn a lot of theory from him.

AND DON'T TRY TO BE THE FASTEST, MELODY IS VERRY, VERRY IMPORTANT !!! . .and ofcourse practice to. I totally agree with this, dont pick up the guitar just to be the fastest. Pick up the guitar to play music lol thats its purpose. bottem line, its for music. I would definatly recommend Speed Kills and get yourself a guitar teacher. Em failing that I guess you could buy instructional dvds etc.

Even if you tried to be the fastest straight away you would fail miserably...no offense to you...im not singling you out. Michael only became fast becuase of ....natural talent not just on the guitar, but on the piano...he was very, very dedicated to his work and consistently put his 100% effort into everything(or, well, i think so anyway), he started off slow...as he says in speed lives "you know...i wasnt always this fast...i didnt just pick up the guitar and go <insert noises here>" ;D, he started off slow like all of us, take it easy, and youll get there.

There is no substitute for hard work or for practice. It takes patience, time and perseverance, but the results are worth it.

Mike, I think everyone would agree with you on that because you are the result of all you have mention above. Is it me or does Mike always seems to come out with the coolest and wise stuff to say lol
