i have an ibanez rg series guitar with a double locking trem, and i thought it was supposed to stay in tune really well, even when using the whammy bar. mine goes out of tune about every ten minutes and its really annoying. am i doing something wrong?

First: put some oil over the saddles and over the locking nuts you know, make sure you tune the guitar and lock the nuts tigh no to much but enough, look if you Floyd is parallel to the body of the guitar and i don't recall the way the strings are hold in the Floys do they have the inserts block that hold the strings or you can put the strings thr. if they have inserts block make sure is tigh, maybe someone else has another clue

I have Ibanez RG series too and i never had a problem with tuning, i lock the nuts and i use Whammy bar VERY often - and i don't have to tune it for 2 days, maybe a little - with fine tuning!! It's just great!

A common problem with locking trems is people OVER tighten them. This puts a grove in the nut plate and/or a grove in the little black block in the floyd itself, then the strings are never held tight and they can slide.

I've made a promise to myself that I will never buy another Floyd Rose guitar. For me, they've always been more trouble than they're actually worth unless you're playing relies heavily on divebombs etc.

What RG model do you have? the floyds (edge pro 2 or something?) in the lower end RG's aren't the greatest for tuning stability.
I suggest having someone experienced make sure it's properly setup. It could just be the springs aren't tight enough, or even the strings aren't stretched enough ;D

I have a friend with an RG (don't know the number, he said somewhere in the 400 somethin region), and he sat in front of a live crowd a few nights ago and tried anxiously to tune his guitar for a straight half hour to no avail. I just sat down on the side of the platform and played some Caprise #5 extended onto Michael's riffs I suggest just getting someone to look at it. 'dem maintenance people know what they're doing

I watched this local band the other day they where pretty bad but you thorght you the least one of the guitarists could of done was tune it?! The rest of the band started then he came in with his out of tune guitar an they where forced to stop an then tune it...

Well the lower you tune the the lower the string will be so your whammy system will be very close to the body.

You have to make sure that the tension from the springs is equal on both sides, so when you press down on the whammy bar, they both move at the same time and the same amount. This is important, as when the whammy bar goes back to its regular level, both sides need to come to a stop at exactly the same time in exactly the same place. If they dont, the guitar will most certainly go out of tune. Just open up the back, and alter the screws accordingly untill its perfect.
