Man, I haven't posted in a while... But anyway a lot of "neo-classical shredders" use scalloped fretboards (Yngwie, Joe Stump, etc...). I was wondering what Michael or anyone else in here for that matter thinks of them. Supposedly they make bending easier, and allow you to play with a lighter touch. Just wanted to get some oppinions before I convert my old mex strat into a cheap copy of an Yngwie strat.
By the way, whens the MAB sig. guitar coming out?

I have a malmsteen sig. guitar and I really enjoy having the scalloped frets but I dont think i could use it all the time. I also find I can hold notes for longer with it aswell.

You need a lighter touch on the frettinghand or You'll bend high. But if You can adjust to this You can get higher speed. It's also great for big vibrato

I've heard its harder to play with a scalloped neck. I found it not too bad, some people i know hate them and just cant use them at all so it all really depends on what ur like when u try it really. Its like trying something u have never ate before, u either like it or hate it.

is it expensive to scallop your neck? and I'm talking about going to an expert instead of doing it myself

It's usually like $100 american to get the job done, but the price will vary depending on who does the job.

I would say that its more than a little scratching lol. You have to cut half the kneck away then make it smooth again lol. $100 is actually cheap (well in my currency )

Planning on doing it to a cheap guitar I never play anyway, just to try it out. I'll tell you how it turns out if I ever get around to it.

It's more than a hundred bucks to have it done. Last time I checked, it was more like two.
Playing chords can be a pain, especially when you switch quickly. The notes will detune due to the uneven pressure with the playing hand.

Ok you noobs for all you small viewed mainstream ban wagons.IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING STOP BEING DEAD BEATS!IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED ONE THAN DON'T FREAKN TALK STUFF THATS WRONG! It's ONLY for the help of bends and it feels nice, like glass.Thats also why Yngwie can get the high notes he does with a 21 freted guitar. It does not make you play faster, cleaner, it makes no difference from easy to hard, either you can play or you can't.Besides it's all up to the player and whether or not they find it suitable each player has difference demands and taste's. I suggest to get this professionally done or use this tech article I have which I used to do my scalloped on my old first guitar (Epiphone-Demon FX) www.projectguitar.com/tut/scal1.htm I hope you have learned some valuble material and enjoy whatever choice you decide to do, but the point is to have fun and PLAY LOUD! ;D

Right it will not make You faster, but You do need a lighter touch not to bend the strings while fretting, and a lighter touch does make it easier to play fast. And please don't patronice me, I do own and play a guitar with a scalloped neck and for 4notesperstring saying : "i wont play a guitar with out it" I guess the same goes for him.

Voodoochildx, have a coke and a smile and shut up I own a malmsteen signature and I can safely say it made me move quicker BUT only on a guitar with scalloped frets. Like Blondie says u need a lighter touch and there for it makes u move a bit quicker. So stop trying to be a little know it all and calm down, there was no need for u to have an outburst like that. And also u said its all up to the player, well u fool that implies that u are implying that everyone plays different, so there for maybe u cant play quick on them but other people can.

WyldeStallion you must be a real un-experienced player than anybody who thinks they're gonna or are faster on a Scallop should just quit. Oh yea and I'd also outplay you anyday. For what I said in my post I ment it as a choice of either perfering a scalloped neck , or not perfering a scalloped neck depending on how it serves you.You should perhaps contact more experienced players and stop being so stupid, I know about Scallops because I have my own guitar with one, I've used Malmsteen strats and know much wiser guitar players than you (than again I think a begginer is wiser) who share the same opion I do.

lol un-experianced *yawn* ive been playing since i was 6! i can read and write music and know every note on guitar (if u dont believe u can ask Blackorchidx when he gets back) . I never said it made me over-all a faster player but when it comes to playing scalloped it just seems much more easy to move my fingers.
And to your "outplaying" me, I DONT CARE! I dont care if u are better than me cause basically... I dont care. We are all different, and there is always someone better than you. Guitar playing is not some sort of legue that u join and see who is better. So why bother trying to beat everyone else when u can just do what feels rite, if u feel that being a pr*ck is rite for u then do it lol
Stop being nasty dude. Do u always pick on people? Infact thats the wrong question, here is the rite one. How long have u thought that u know everything? I dont know everything and i probably never will.
"""Ok you noobs for all you small viewed mainstream ban wagons.IT DOESN'T DO ANYTHING STOP BEING DEAD BEATS!IF YOU HAVEN'T PLAYED ONE THAN DON'T FREAKN TALK STUFF THATS WRONG!"""
And also dont u think that was kinda outta line calling everyone "noobs" "small viewed mainstream ban wagons" and "dead beats". I mean u basically had a wee girly fit there lol. The main reason i was angry with you was for saying those things. If u were joking about it then say that, if u say sorry for calling us those names then i will say sorry for anything nasty i have said about u and anything i said that has made u feel negative emotions. Everyone has there own opinion but there aint really any need to call us names when u give ur opinion. Even though it was not an opinion, u basically said everyone was wrong and u were rite.

OK... This ends here... no more names, no more competitions... just stop it... I think everyone has had a chance to defend them self! Back to the original thread: Man, I haven't posted in a while... What i dont get about scalloped fretboards is people saying about bending being easier because you can push the strings down as well as to the side, because the fretboard is not there to stop you. When i play, the strings dont touch the fretboard anyways
