cool stuff, mr. blacksteen. you're a clean player. were those ascending runs on the 2nd clip economy picked? btw, smart of you to put a shred clip. most people here won't comment if there's no shred.

OH snap man, had I seen this I would've replied. Loved the take on the Love of my Life solo, really good job. Regarding the shred, super clean and sick. But come on..I think we'd all rather hear the beautiful melody in the L.o.m.L solo than the same repeating patterns over and over . Too bad Steve wouldn't know a good melody if it hit him at 76 BPM made up only of 8th notes and quarter notes

That's true, so good thing I recorded that last one. The clip is actually two recordings put together, the first one being basically fast alternate picking, and the last one just me running through some economy picked scale fragments. Never used that technique in my playing before, so this is a first for me. Don't really practice specific techniques much anyway, so I've still got plenty of limitations with each technique. For example, I wouldn't be able to descend as fast using eco. picking, but I think I'd rather work on using alternate picking for those instances. Kinda like YJM, in a way.

Looks like P90-type pickups are the way to go, rather than humbuckers. Now I just need to figure out what to do next...

Love Queen such a great band (love Brian May's playing to death) and in today's world May is really underrated because he isn't a shredder. You always hear ppl citing shredders as influneces (which isn't a bad thing, but there are other styles of non-fast playing).

It's so true that my tastes in music s***, ya, right Steve. Everyone's different, bite me. PS, most of my shots are jokes, but I honestly believe with all the shred in your head, you couldn't write a memorable melody a la, Beatles, Clapton, Zeppelin, etc.

Sorry. My bad here. But learning that shots against me are "true" just blew a fuse. Well he can believe what he wants. You should record the solo to Killer Queen. Love that one. ;D

You should record the solo to Killer Queen. Love that one. ;D Ah, that's a great idea! It's one of my faves, although the harmonies will be a bitch to get right. Maybe I'll just do the live version instead, he changes it around a bit. But yeah, good solo, it'll definitely be one of my options.

Sweet! ;D that'll be awesome to hear. Some many good solos by May, I got a great chance to get much more initmate with Queen's music during my 5-day stay in the hospital. I've always loved'em by man..they're truly an amazing group.

My dad has hooked the tower up to the hi-fi speakers.
So it's quality instead of the crap little things we got with the computer. Lol.

I assumed you were gonna play with a backing track, i liked the fact you didn't cos it's harder to get the timing down. I liked it. I must admit i'm not the biggest Queen fan although i hear it all the time cos my mum is a huge fan.
I liked the tone (and Brian's), very clear- not distorted.
The wanking was good too. The alt picking reminded me a bit of Matthew Mills (when he's clean) with less treble in the tone (which is good since Matt's tone can be very 'sharp').
We'll have to get someone to clock it, i don't know who cough* William *cough.
The eco picking was great too. Very "buttery" a la Stump, Romeo.
How long have you been playing now (i think you started around 2001-02?).
Also, what amp did/do you use? (I hope to god it aint the same as mine).

Waaay ahead of you, Steve. Willie clocked the fastest sequence(which I'm not sure is on that very clip) at a clean 14 notes per second. Not a difficult run, though.
I picked up the guitar in 2000, recorded my first clip in late 2002, sounded like turd in 2003/2004, and started practising seriously in early 2005. As a result of my less than serious approach to playing through the years, I wouldn't say I've been 'playing' for 7 years. Including all the breaks and wasted moments, I'd say 4-5 years.
My amp is the Peavey Valveking 112, with a Tonebone Classic in front. The Tonebone provides the fat May-ish tone, as well as the smooth shred sound. I recorded these clips late at night, so it's all due to the Tonebone that I actually get a warm tube sound.

Ah, ok. That's Kee Marcello territory. Not bad company to be with........
Man, I was exactly the same with guitar. It was a part of the furniture for 3 years in my room gathering dust, then September-2005 i took it serious. Some people need a kick up the ass. Lol.
Peavey's are apparently awesome amps. Kev (TheMaidenManiac) is a psycho with these so don't tell him you have 1.
The tone has a smoother classic rock feel to it which is good for shred too, although i assumed you'd be a EL34 man.
Do you gig at all?

I will go for a handmade AC30 once I can afford it, as the Peavey is really too high gain for my liking. I use pedals for gain, always preferred that option over just cranking the amp to heat the tubes properly.
Listening to old recordings of me, from '03/'04, it's everything I hate about guitar playing. Glad I sat down and started taking it seriously.
I have done some gigging, once at a local festival and once as a solo act. Very few musicians around, otherwise I'd be spending most of my time with a band.
