I take it you're not familiar with the term 'phrasing'? Well, you need to work on yours. Please stop trying to play fast.

Well, phrasing is basically how you shape the notes. How hard you pick the note, adding vibrato, how long you hold it, etc. It's a common problem amongst beginners, especially in the shred community, but it's easy to fix. All you need is awareness, you need to be aware of what you're doing wrong.
First of all, learn how to add vibrato to notes. A firm, steady vibrato is often the key to sounding good. Listen to Gary Moore, he's got a very heavy and defined vibrato, one that is easy to use as a starting point to build your own. Check out "Still Got The Blues", it's a great bending and vibrato workout.
Use a low-gain tone, it'll make it easier to hear what you're doing.

yeah, it's that way with everyone.... not. phrasing is very important. people think not so much guitar as if piano, but it's equally important.

You can actually practice phrasing by trying to make the cliche licks sound fresh & change notation etc.
There's actually no such thing as good or bad phrasing in terms of rules, BUT i personally think the best "phrasers" lie within the fusion category.
Travis, check out these players- Greg Howe, John McLaughlin, Shawn Lane, Scott Henderson, Allan Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, Brett Garsed.
I personally love the straight jazz players too such as- Jim Hall, Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Howard Alden, George Benson, Pat Martino, Larry Carlton, Mike Stern.
Some blues & blues-rock players have excellent phrasing too for their genre- Albert King, Buddy Guy, B.B.King, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmy Page, Muddy Waters, Gary Moore.
What alot of top top level players do is listen to phrasing by different instrumentalists (ie- Holdsworth looked into Coltrane), to see how they approach note choice, note legths, accentuation, dynamics etc.
The main difference from guitar playing original licks and piano playing works by composers is that the compser has already chosen the notes and notation so its up to you HOW to play them but you work within what's presented.
It's so much harder writning a phrase from scratch than putting a spin on an already existing piece of music.
Anyways, original phrasing comes with time- you'll start by ripping off players you listen to but then you'll eventually find your own style.

Here's A Minor:
----------------------------------------------------------------12-13-15-17~~~ -----------------------------------------------10-12-13-15--------------------- ------------------------------------9-10-12-------------------------------------- ----------------------7-9-10-12------------------------------------------------- -------------7-8-10-------------------------------------------------------------- -5-7-8-10-----------------------------------------------------------------------
With using this particular scale, you have to start any lick you want to be "minor" on the A note (all in red) otherwise you are playing a different mode and while all in the KEY of Am, the lick itself wont have the sound/tonality (based on the interval spacing) of minor. If you start a lick on, say the E note, you'll have E Phrygian, an while Phrygian is a minor type scale (because of the b3 in it's scale forumla), it wont actually sound minor, it's more of a eastern minor sound depending on how you phrase it. (Everything comes down to phrasing).

I'm not talking about transposing a scale up or down the neck, i'm talking about using that particular pattern i posted.
If you start on any note which ISN'T red, then you aren't playing an Am lick.
