Today, I went to Guitar Center and tried out the Dave Mustaine Dean. I was ready to play some Megadeth to see how close I could come to Dave's sound, but then I choked up. I think maybe it had to do with the guy next to me who was playing an Yngwie Malmsteen lick. Anyway, I found what I want to be my next guitar, so that's a good thing!

I normally d*** around when testing out guitars/amps. When trying out an acoustic, i go into "Di Meola wannabe" mode and play some Meditteranean Sundance style 3NPS licks as fast as i can. Ha ha. (I just hop i'm ot plying it when Di Meola walks and and then plays it at full speed. Lol). Round my area people seem impressed with my playing JUST because most are into blues & classic rock so it's alot of bending, vibrato & Page/Hendrix type licks going on from other players. It's not what they're used to & to be honest most are a million times better than me. I'd love the bend/vibrato ability alot of the players i've seen have. 1 guy had a vibrato about 80% as good as Yngwie's and i was like ---> He was the same with my alt picking but his touch & intonation was WAY better than mine, i was just wanking scales. Lol. When i go up London shops where they have the big boy amps & expensive guitars, it's pure death metal rif***e & Jason Becker style s***. \m/ Loads of metal fans up London know what you're playing so are headbanging. It's an awesome atmosphere. I wouldn't be embarrased or anything though kgbrad, everyone s***ed at sometime and you probably are better than what you think you are. Even if you do s***, there's no shame. You don't pick up a guitar and play like McLaughlin from day 1. Don't be afraid to try out amps or guitars. If anyone takes the piss then they're just ass****s so ignore them.

I agree with Kenny. One time the shop assistant told me that it was forbidden to play as fast as I did when I did some crazy legato stuff LOL ;D Thats pretty much the only comment I've got when playing in stores, I'm glad it was a positive one atleast. Anyway many of the people here in my area are actually very good, the "rock people" are the best, the "metalheads" and the really old "bluesmens" aren't that good though of what I've seen. BTW was it the expensive Mustaine signature you played?

I agree with Kenny apart from the keeping volume at acceptable levels, dude i live in London that doesn't apply!!!
Muhahahahaha.
* I always play @ 3-4 though. Never a tube amp @ 10!

Haha it really doesn't matter what you play in a music store when you just sit down and play, it seems like a lot of kids just go in there and try to show off, when the point of playing a guitar in a music store should be to see how it sounds and if you want that guitar/equipment etc.. Then again, one you pick up a guitar, its hard to put it down, and hard not to play whatever licks you think sound cool.. It's funny to shred in front of someone who doesn't play guitar, because if you're good, or good enough they will usually be very impressed. I know I'm pretty good but theres thousands more people on the internet and such that are way better, still though for a moment you feel like you're at the top. "Whoa dude!! How long have you been playing!?"

Haha, yeah I know nobody else cares and I was just testing out the guitar. It still kind of ***s when you're trying to get a feel for the guitar and the dude next to you is shredding as loud as possible. And no, it was the $300 model I'm not good enough for an expensive model!

Yeah, when I go into Guitar Center, I pick up a random guitar from the shelf (usually Daisy Rock, I'm a fruity bastard, lol) and start shreeding away. The only comment I got from one of the store clerks (he looked like Ben Stiller in "The Pick Of Destiny") was when I played Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath, Sweet Leaf, and the Neon Knights, he told me that I was too young to be playing Black Sabbath.

As a matter of fact, Yngwie HAS a Les Paul. I know, but Yngwie on a Gibby doesn't seem right. It's the equivalent of Led Zeppelin on a Fender or Pantera on an Ibanez or something.

Jimmy Page used a Stratocaster at one point. To my knowlege, Dimebage never owned an Ibanez.
Actually, Yngwie on an Ibanez would be pretty awesome.

Every pro has loads of various guitars in their collection, but the defining sound is of Led Zep is Page on a Gibby.
Yngwie on a strat.
You could get close to the Pantera sound with a mahogany 22-fret Sabre i suppose, but it doesn't seem right.
You can't get the classic Led Zep sound on a Strat or the classic Yngwie sound on a GLP.

You do know the Stairway to Heaven solo was done on a Fender Telecaster, don't you? I've never really liked Page's studio tones that much, it's annoyingly trebly and thin. Listen to the Zeppelin live recordings where Page uses Gibsons - the songs sound a lot ballsier. Yngwie uses a Gibson Flying V on one of the songs in the live in Budokan show, I've also heard someone say that Yngwie used a '57 Black LP for a lot of his rhythm parts (not sure which album, probably Marching Out?), and he once opened a show with an LP as well. There's also a video of Yngwie shredding on a Gibson ES in his home, he uses more Gibsons than we think. But yes, he look best with his Strat ;D

Most pros use more than 1 type of guitar for studio (And sometimes live but mainly studio), but Page's signature sound is a GLP- or you can fake it by using a PAF humbucker equipped Mahogany guitar with a 24.75" scale but then there isn't the glamour of saying i play a GLP. ;D
Solos being alot of 1-note stuff is ok to record on a different guitar- it may call for a different tone (ie- humbucker to singlecoil), but Page's riffs and alot of his solos are only successfully replicated on a GLP IMO.
Yngwie has used different guitars for some things (i'm not sure which album he used the LP on- i don't think it was Marching Out cos that was weak), but that's still SO minimal that you can hardly attribute any of his tone/sound to a mahogany Gibson.
It's Alder 25.5" scale strat w/singlecoils all the way for 99% of his playing.
You can't get that slick lead tone (neck) from a Gibson & you can't get hat awesome Page-esque riff tone with a strat.
If you could combine both in 1 guitar- it'd sell millions.
Also, Yngwie must have 100+ guitars, i'd be surprised if they were ALL Fender strats. Although, probably 90 or so are. Lol
