Every1 at schoo lalways asks me "How many hours a day do you practice. Most of the gutiarists there (who actually take lessons) say "I practice 3 hours a day." I say "I go home plug in my guitar play gor a while, eat dinner, play some more, unplug it and go to bed." Basically from 4:30 till i go to sleep
Whats ur pactice schedule?

I don't really have a schedule for practicing. Like you, I sort of practice off and on throughout the day. I'll sit down, play for about a half-hour, watch something on TV, get on my computer, go back and play some more, etc.

Someone asked this on the Yngve forum, i've just copy/pasted this-
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
45 Minutes: WARM UP- Finger Exercises & s***
1 Hour- GUITAR: Alternate Picking (A Guthrie Govan "Waves" rip off lick atm)
15 Minutes- REST
1 Hour- GUITAR: Legato (a couple of Holdsworth lines from "Devil Take The Hindmost")
15 Minutes- REST
1 Hour- GUITAR: Sweep Picking (George Bellas' 3-String atm)
15 Minutes- REST
1 Hour- GUITAR: Bending/Vibrato ("Liar" by Yngwie for a faster vibrato & "Blitzkrieg" for a slow and wide vibrato).
15 Minutes- REST
1 Hour- GUITAR: Chordal Work (Finding and learning all the chords in a key, inversions etc)
15 Minutes- REST
1 Hour- GUITAR: Alternate Picking Part 2 (I'm practising my "F Bartok" lick which is a sextuplet lick and i move it (the pattern) chromatically to build up stamina & concentration- as well as control)
15 Minutes- REST
1 Hour- GUITAR: "Project Solo" (just finished Led Zep's "Black Dog"- i've got it as good as i can play it at this moment in time. My bends and vibrato aren't Page quality though)
Also, 15 Minutes of Ear Training (Troy Stetina's "Fretboard Mastery") & 30 Minutes to an Hour of Theory (but i'll be doing more next year).
I start really early in the morning with the Ear Training- when no-one's up so they can't hear my jank singing. Lol.

It's not actually the lick as played from the song (i don't think so anyway). I found a tab somewhere & re-arranged it as strict 32nds in 4/4 (i can't remember how it was tabbed) and i've also re-arranged the fingerings to make it a bit easier, and i also like the way it sounds through the neck pickup the way i did it. The way i play it is palm muting the 3 bass strings & picking as aggressively as possible. Here it is- -------------------14-------------------------14-16----17-19-17-16-14------------------------------------- ----------14-15-17----17----15-17-15-14-15-17-------------------------17-15-14----15-14------------------- -13-14-16-------------------------------------------------------------------------------16-14-13-14-13---- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------16- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -14-12-11-12-11-------------------------------------------11----------12-11------------------------------- ----------------14-12-11----12-11----11-12-11-12-14----15----15-14-13-------15----14-13-12-11------------- ----------------------------------14----------------------------------------------------------13-11-12-13-
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------12-13-14-15- ----------------------------------------11-------------------------11-13-14-13----11-12-13-14------------- ----------------11-12-11-------11-12-14----14-12-14----12-11-12-14---------------------------------------- ----11-12-13-14-------------15---------------------------------------------------------------------------- -14-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-12-------------------14-------------------14-16-17----16-14----14----------------16~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ----15-17-15-14-15-17-------17-15-14-15-17-------------------17----17-15-14-17---------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tempos- Me (fastest so far while being clean): 82bpm Govan (speed capable of while being very clean): 120bpm Guthrie can play a bit. Lol. The great thing with this lick is that you think it's gonna being all diatonic from the first bar & a half but then it gets interesting, adding some chromatics. I like these type of licks. Very interesting- Lane had a few like this.

Well you can't really count the rests 7 warm up as part of practicing- i think you need a rest to soak up what you've just learned.
It actually doesn't seem that long tbh because there are the breaks.
Next year it'll be less of the mechanical practicing and more music based cos fingers-crossed i'll have a decent enough technique.

That's a lot, your playing shouldn't be bad at all. Why haven't you posted any recording/video so far? Lol

Well 2 reasons-
1- I actually don't have nor can afford a decent quality video camera, i can't use a webcam since the computer is downstairs in the living room & i don't like mp3's cos they can be doctored and you never really know if the person is playing or not so i'd like it to be video.
2- First impressions last a lifetime and at the moment, it'd be a bunch of alt picking licks & that's it. I'd like to post stuff when i'm a more complete player, not just wanking. When i have better phrasing, vibrato, touch, control etc & also equipment cos my tone although good for my equipment, isn't that good.
I will post mini-vids of licks when i get a videocamer, but i've got all this to buy before i get a camera-
* Piano (probably the Yamaha U3X) * Good "overdrive" allround amp (probably the ENGL Fireball) * Good "cleans" amp (probably he Fender Twin) * "Tone" guitar (Carvin HF-2) * Theory books (loads of them! Lol) * Blow-up Antonio Banderas doll
Which is alot of dough.
Also, i'm trying to swing the cash to go to see Allan @ Jazz Cafe in 10 days!!!!

That's true. But still, 7 hours! Alot of people react that way when i tell them. Ha ha. But you look at someone like David Beckham who played football every minute of the day cos he had the dedication & hunger. That's what's needed to be a top level professional at anything. MAB did that afterall. The truth is, if you wanna be a top level pro you have to put in the time, whether it's strict practicing how i do it, or just playing for a substancial time like say Yngwie. Practicing the right things is more important than the number of hours, but you should combine both. Also, i'd like to point out that's only the time i practice, i often *** around with licks/riffs/songs. I've got a guitar in my hand most of the day- even when i'm watching an NFL game. Depending on how well the Giants play depends on what stuff i play. Last week against Dallas i was playing some Morbid Angel. Ha ha.

I never practice. Play with your ears, if it sounds good, it is good.
