I'm heading to college soon, and I'm in the market for a nice combo good for shredding, meaning nice thick distortion, as I have never been into overdrive/distortion pedals and such. I was looking at the Peavey Valveking 212. Any advice?

If you are thinking about that Peavey, I would also definitely check out the 212 Vyper TUBE 120. Awesome modeling amp with killer effects, all tube. Much more versatile overall, and better shreddy tones than the Valve King, which is a great straight ahead tube amp, but very basic in features. I have been using the Vyper Tube amps on a few gigs, and will probably purchase one soon.

With so many tones available, I can get a decent sound out of the non-tube Vypers, but would not want to gig with one. I think the Vyper tube amps sound much better than the non-tube version. The effects are the same.
I generally use the "Plexi" setting, with or w/o the tubescreamer stompbox model, but there are several other great amp models in there that sound killer in the tube version.
I also really like their 2 pedal board, great wah and volume pedal operation.

The Valveking 212 is 100w. If that's a small combo, I'm WAY too old. Lol.
I highly recommend the Mesa Express 5:50 212 combo.
I think you'll need a good OD pedal with it. I know you're not a fan but really OD pedals can add a lot to your rig. I wouldn't use it for MORE gain, I'd use it for a better type of gain. Smooth.
