Dream Theater, Pink Floyd a close second I remember for awhile I liked Symphony X more than Dream Theater. It changed after awhile but it did open my eyes to the very under-rated guitarist of Michael Romeo..

The only album I have is the odyssey, which I love. I still use the intro to inferno as an alternate picking exercise. Michael Romeo is an awesome guitarists as well ... has anybody seen his instructional?

I'll admit 2 things... 1 - The singer is phenomenal BUT I dont think he fits the band as well as other prog-rock singers. 2 - Even I get tired of some Dream Theater breaks that sans-vocals last in excess of 2 minutes..It does get boring.. BUT.. They still kick major butt-tox lol..

Well Metallica was the only band I REALLY like up there, but it has to be either Metallica, Megadeth or Nirvana that makes best in my eyes

I have his instructional video. It is mostly a show off type video...Romeo shows some of his best solos off of The Damnation Game and Divine Wings of Tragedy. He wanted to explain more in depth how he composes solos, but the producer just wanted him to show off his trademark licks. He does do an excellent job of slowing the examples down in time compared to some other videos I have seen by Yngwie and others. It is amazing to see the level of control Romeo has...he plays so effortlessly.

I don't like Dream Thetre either, not at all, sure they are all great individually, but its just not my thing i guess.
Anywyas, i think i have to pick black sabbath, they have a load of great songs and paved the way for all kinds of metal, definitly my favourite from the list.

Out of that list, metallica since they r my fave band. Though they would be better with Dave instead of Kirk, but then no Megadeth unless......Holy wars, with metallica instead, i can see it now ;D

The Swedish band Soilwork gets my vote. Amazing dual solos and catchy songs. I don't know how many people here know of them, but I'm thinking there must be a few. Actually there's a lot of great Scandanavian metal bands. In Flames, Children of Bodom, Opeth, Skyfire, Arch Enemy, etc. This is the stuff I am mostly into right now.

I voted Metallica, but I like lotsa bands....picking a favorite is hard. Rush is awsome, Boston is awsome, I also like Blind Guardian and Rhapsody. Dream Theatre has some really good stuff, but some of their stuff sounds like elevator music ;D
