I think when we are practicing and we make mistakes those mistakes are storage somewhere in our brain and when we don't want them they just appears when we are performing , what do you guys do to avoid mistakes.

Practice, Practice, Practice ;D I think the point Ernesto was trying to make was that practicing WAS the problem, because as you practiced the mistakes got burned into your brain. I know, it doesn't make sense to me either . My advice for avoiding mistakes is to put down the guitar and walk away. Mistakes are unavoidable. We're human. You're not going to do everything perfect the first time. Blondie, of course, is right. You practice, you gain perfect control over your instrument. I just started playing a couple months ago, I make mistakes all the time. You're not going to be Michael Angelo clean when you start. For instance, when I first started with scales, I didn't alternate pick, only downstrokes, which of course is a VERY bad idea. It just seemed to come naturally to me though, I could not upstroke for my life. However, I practiced, practiced, practiced, and the problem was solved. I doubt it'll come up again when I'm performing or something. Anyways this post is waaaaay too big, so I'll stop now. ;D

Then it's the s word. SLOW...Practice slow, so slow that You can focus on all aspect of the excersice/scale/riff whatever You are on to.

True, and I would also like to add that you should not only practice slow, but trying to keep the timing/rhythm as you practice also. Other small stuff like that...time signature changes, volume adjustments(can't remember the musical term at the moment ), etc; keep those in mind when you practice something and don't save it for later. Although I have just started guitar, I have about 6-7 years of piano under my belt, and I know a little bit about practicing music .

thats why you always have to practice with perfection in your head. And if its too fast for you to perfectly control your fingers you have to take it even slower. At first concentration is the biggest hinderance. But once your concentration muscle gets developed you'll see results more quickly. And if 16ths are too quick just increase the not value by double or quadruple if necessary(16ths to 8ths or 16ths to quarter) Whatever it takes to play as perfectly as possible. Also, you're minds perception of perfect will also increase. It takes a lot of work

And if u practise 100 hours a day for 300 years, u ll still make mistakes and u will have missed the meaning of life

True Knowlege exists in you knowing nothing, flawless guitar playing exists in that u dont play, no matter what we do, we always screw up at some point, who would have ever thought the karate kid would beat steve vai, except from the obvious that it would be a happy ending.

It all comes down to personall perception of perfect, fast, or whatever. We just think Vai and Batio are so great b/c our versions of perfect and fast aren't comparible to theirs

I can't believe you said cooly has more clarity and perfection than Vai OMG . Find me one mistake Vai has made in his playing and I'll find you 100 with Cooley. Honestly, try me. I just won't happen. I've got Cooley's first cd and some of those pieces are horribly played, just awful. Listen to any Vai album and listen for cracked notes, miscues, uneffective playing, meanderless wondering around the fretboard... ect... It's like the Lochness Monster... It's not there!!! It doesn't exist!

As i said before, I believe Cooly has jumped on the shredwagon, i cannot undermine his guitar playing though and i appreciate his free lessons on his website, but his stuff is just not for me at all.
