im sure most of you have this problem: whenever i really wanna sit down and practice stuff, mainly trying to get a scale memorized, i get somewhat bored and its hard to make me teach myself these things. its like i get all set up to play/practice and then all of a sudden i hear the music to the simpsons come on in the other room. the simpsons win at least 90% of the time. is there any hope??

i actually do have speed kills [as well as two G3's and a dream theater concert], if at all it actually LOWERS my self-esteem as far as guitar playing goes, although it does inspire me to try a little harder. the concerts inspire me to play, but its hard to force myself to learn

Yeah, it's smart to buy some instruction DVD-s. Petrucci's "Rock Discipline" is good, too.

There are some pretty helpful computer programs too, I use something called Ultimate Fretboard (something like that) to help memorize the note for each fret and stuff like that.

Well, it is true that if you practice unwillingly... You can have all the computer programs and instructions of all the best musicians, but you won't make it. Ofcourse, there's that little part called talent. But I'd say that a good instrument player is a result of 90% of practice and 10% of talent.

if you dont know how to do something, like sweep pick 6 string arpegios or something like that, just try doing it! once you realize you *** at it, you get more motivation to practice. at least i did

and try to practice things that interest you. for example, if your favorite band is poison, try to learn and practice their songs regularly. it lets you know how they play and write music, and what they were thinking. dont over do it tho; try to practice scales and arpegios and your technique on top of that.

Practice being boring has never been an issue for me, i study music as well as medicine, its a study as well as a hobby, 2 reasons to stick at it.

I usually sit down and improv for a while, then I practice some dream theater songs, some yngwie, (far beyond the sun still kicks my *expletive deleted*!!!) and after I play a lot of different stuff, I work on my arps, my scales, my speed picking, etc, I just kind of throw those in randomly. Also, I love to just sit there and play some of my favorite solos, that is never boring for me.

You either have the guitar player gene or you don't. That's what I think.

And one more thing... When you're learning a song by your favorite band, learn the easy ones first, in a slow tempo, and when you got that, increase the tempo, and begin to learn harder songs. That gives motivation and good results.
