Hello everyone, I've been away for who the f knows how long, I hope everyone is doing fine.
So there's this new channel in the UK, Sky "Arts", and they have a show called 'Guitar Stars.'
It's a talent show for guitarists.
I watched the 4 first episodes.
They divided the competitors into 4 groups: Acoustic, Rock, Jazz, and Classical (No Reggae, what??)
so I was disappointed by the 'rock' guys, some of them are good, but nothing impressive, technique-wise or melody-wise. Not that I expected everyone to 'shred', but really compared to the 'Classical' competitors, I was not impressed. I don't know about the Jazz guys, they bored me. I don't really care for the 'Acoustic' ones. The Classical guys (and chicks!) were very good.
Like other 'talent' shows, the jury is a bit biased.
They have 'mentors' (they get Rodrigo y Gabriela for 'acoustic' and Tony Iommi for 'rock', and two other guys I don't know) They're supposed to play something from them in an original way in a club. Then the finalist from each category is chosen.
The episodes are on youtube (if they were not removed by now). Try to check it out if you're curious.
I liked the idea at the beginning, but in the end it's a "tv talent show", don't have high expectations.

I noticed this programme on Sky Arts a few weeks ago and did watch a little of the first episodes. To be honest I found it to be a bit boring so I didnt watch much of the other auditions. I did watch the full episode of the "Rock" section and I liked watching Tony Iommi teaching and jamming with each of the contestants. I thought the 2 younger boys were really good for there age. Its incredible how young teenagers can learn things so quickly. I actually enjoyed watching the part at the end where they had to perform in front of an audience in the club. Tony Iommi and the other two judges were there to choose a catagory winner. The 15 year old Alfie was definitly the best all round player and entertainer. He was really good and his performance made me smile. Im glad they chose him to go through to the final section. I really hope he goes on to win.

Hello falcon.
I did watch the episode. And, I don't think any of the rock guitarists are going to make it. I didn't really like them that much. Alfie, well, yes he is young and already a very good player but I wouldn't have picked him. I liked the guy with the whammy pedal more. Aside from that episode, it is indeed boring to watch.

Hi, Yeah, I agree, none of them exactly set the stage on fire but that kid made me laugh and I liked the way he brought the audience into his performance unlike the other players. Its interesting you liked the guy with the whammy pedal, his style of playing just isnt my cup of tea at all. I'm not a fan of pedals in general and Tony did point out that when you use those kind of things in your performance what are you going to do if they break down. I was going to watch the sem-finals yesterday and forgot about it. I might try and catch the repeat this week. I'm interested to see who will win now.

What did you think of the "Guitar Star" winner? I can't even remember his name to be honest but he did have a very unique playing style. I really don't think any of them had the "star" quality though.
