The first thing you should do for speed is just see how fast you can play one note with your picking hand. Play the same note as many times in a row as fast as you can without stopping. Work on getting the "down up down up" alternate picking style down. Then start with some basic scale exercises. I really recommend trying out MAB's instructional video "Speed Kills". The first 4 exercises are what really got me to be able to play fast and precise. I mainly played chords and simple solos until I studied Speed Kills. It made me think of the fretboard in terms of patterns instead of hundreds of individual notes, it unlocked something in my brain. And it's full of good exercises for both your fretboard and picking hand.
Should you practice sweep picking? Maybe not yet. Work on getting one concept down first. If you want to improve the clarity of your playing and your speed, work on alternate picking, scales, and covering songs that you like. There are a lot of free videos on youtube that will show you how to play songs. With youtube you can learn a lot on your own. If you want to impress your friends learn how to play 1 major sweep arpeggio, and 1 minor sweep arpeggio, and play the same shapes in different areas on the fretboard, like ascending in whole steps. You'll sound like a wizard with relative ease once it becomes muscle memory. Sweeping may be boring to learn if you are new to guitar because it is even more repetitive than playing melodies or solos. The trick to sweeping is really synchronizing both your hands.
