Hey Michael I've been playing for 2 years, and I'm in a band I started called Knights of Havok. I started studying your technique just last month. your speed kills video is the greatest instructional video of all time. I was wondering how long it took you to become lightening fast like you are? When you were learning to play your guitar, did you have any kind of instruction besides your own prior to college, like a teacher? So far I am completely self-taught and I've learned a lot and advanced quickly. So i was wondering if I could enhance my skills any faster if I had a teacher, or something besides DVDs and tips from the Internet, which have worked wonderfully so far...

Although I'm not Mike, but I know that he learned (=mastered) alternate picking in 2 years and he did have a teacher.

Honestly in the times that we are living in, there is so much out there that if anyone wanted to put in the discipline, they could easily play like MAB, infact between his clinics and instructional, there is no reason not to be able to play as fast as his.
You can learn with or without a teacher, it is mostly a matter of dedication. A teacher does not guarantee anything, as there is a lot of crappy teachers out there that may take your money and not teach you what you want to know.

Practice certainly helps, but if you don't have a natural talent like Michael's you will never play as fast or cleanly as he does (remember, many people can play FAST but they don't also play CLEAN).

It baffles me though, because im not sure there are any stages left to go for guitar.. only time will tell i suppose... i guess Jimmy Hendrix didnt bank on someone playing a guitar like Michael does!

He only cared about Jazz stuff (nothing against Jazz). Then I found a teacher that is into everything (even Chicken Pickin' ha) and he taught me "This CD is dedicated to you" and gave me a bunch of exercises and taught me how to hold the pick and everything.

I think the name comes from Your hand looking like a birds claw and since it's mainly a country technique the chicken was the most natural bird to choose ;D
