Can i just add a comment here. WHAT THE F**K!!!!I have never broken a string in almost a year of playing. And my picks never ware out, but i need 2 buy loads because i always lose them . If you pick so hard as to break about 8 strings a day surely(sp?) if you pick lighter you will be able to be more comfortable with less string breaks. But 39 breaks in a day, must be a record.

I have used Dunlop Jazz 3's for practically my entire guitar playing life. I pick extremely hard and aggressive. I honestly can say that I have never broken one of those picks. Ever. In fact the only time I "broke" guitar picks was when I was 10 and 11 years old. My teacher at that time told me to use full sized Fender lights. They were so thin that I literally tore the tip off them when I played. I started looking for something else and ended up using thick, tear dropped shaped mandolin picks. Once I discovered Jazz 3's I began using them and have never changed. I have many different kinds of picks in my studio but when performing live or soloing, it is always the Jazz 3. Willie, I can't even imagine breaking 1 pick let alone the number you say that you break per day! Your guitar must be screaming for mercy!

My teacher at that time told me to use full sized Fender lights. What type of music were you doing? The only time i think light picks are good is light strumming on an acoustic. I use fender heavies

I don`t actually `break` picks, what i mean is that after a certain amount of practice, a Jazz III (which is my favourite pick) will become worn down the sides of the tip (based around the way i pick, it may ware down in different ways, for different people) and starts to create a different level of friction against the string and just `feels` different against the strings, if you let it become worn then it waill start to `catch` onto the strings, especially the thinner strings, kinda like you were playing with a `hook` instead of a pick! Does this not happen to anyone else? Someone on another forum asked me to take a `before and after` photo of one of my picks, i borrowed a digital camera and took loads of photo`s, but we couldn`t take one with enough detail to show exactly how the tip of the pick looked. Yeah that has happened to me, but it took a long time, like weeks rather than minutes! And it didn't really change the feel of the pick for me yet, but I can see where it's worn I'm fairly certain it's because I'm picking at the wrong angle because it does it way up the side rather than just around the tip I say "wrong" angle... I guess it can't be "wrong" technically but it's certainly not the most efficient I could be, I think. I will need a lot of work on picking technique after my exams...

Maybe you don`t notice the change of the feel of it because it happens to you over such a long period, but this happens to me over minutes, so i definately notice it! It may be worth `pointing` out that i do pick with my pick slightly angled against the strings! Willie Jordan

could be, though if I play with the worn one and then a new one I can't really tell the difference. It's very possible that I'm not experienced enough yet to really appreciate how it feels different, my picking is still erattic at best...

Maybe that`s why, i`m so fussy about how the pick feels against the strings! Willie Jordan ps. can anyone explain to me how to request email notification for replies to any thread i posted in? Cheers!

The other way is when you are in the "post message" window, underneath were you type in the message there are two checkboxes. the first one is:
"Notify of replies: Check this if you wish to be notified of replies to this topic."
Check on it and you will then get notifications.

I can't understand how a Jazz III can wear down in minutes it doesn't matter how often you practice but surely "minutes" isn't the right word? i could understand maybe a days practice for 7-10 hours.

Do you use reds or blacks? I bought a couple of reds yesterday but they feel kinda weird, and slip around in my hand a bit... think I just got used to the size of the black ones

There're also Jazz XL those are "standard" sized Jazz III stiffos (black)

I alway use the red ones! Btw, it`s not that the red ones are a different size to the black ones, there are `Jazz III` picks, and there are also `Jazz III XL` picks! But the `Jazz III XL` is about the size of a normal pick, it is the `Jazz III` that is tiny! Willie Jordan
