I was wondering what your thoughts were on elbow picking vs. wrist picking. The debate comes up a lot on various forums. I know everyones different, but from your own experiences and from working with all the students you've had over the years I was hoping you could shed some light on this.
Thanks!
PS. Speed Kills and Speed Lives are both excellent DVDs. Your a great teacher I hope you continue to produce instructional DVDs in the future.

I haven't taught guitar privately since I became a "known" guitarist, only instructional DVD's etc... but I would say that I pick more from the wrist than the elbow. Obviously one's elbow has to move when playing but the majority of the picking motion IMO should come from the wrist. Hope this helps.

Elbow picking led me to a severe elbow injury , I was pretty fast for while but then it hurt. Go from your wrist and dont tense up. I am trying to retrain myself for wrist picking. I can play at normal speeds, but when I want to hit shred speed, my elbow wants to take over- so then it hurts more. Due to this I have not concentrated on speed in a while.

If you pick with you elbow you will not be able to pick near as fast. Jeff Haneman from Salyer is an "elbow" picker.
