i was having some problems with some unwanted string noises that i was getting when playing through high gain, but i was told to mute out the noises with my palm. i tried it and it seems to work, but now i have another question. if im muting the strings constantly, then should my palm actually rest on the edge of the bridge? or should i just sorta have my palm floating on the strings, lightly touching them to just cut out some excess noise? because i don't want for the muting to make my playing sound disnjointed, i just want to get rid of the excess noises im getting

You can buy a string dampener. Adam

ok, i really don't have the money to buy a string dampener. im confused because im being told by some people to mute the strings and im being told by other people not to mute the strings. i get this noise when i play, sometimes when i lift my finger off the string...it kinda sounds like im doing a pull off. i've tried lifting my fingers more vertically off the fretboard and articulating them more, but the sound is still there. so how do i fix this problem?

I rest my picking hand on the bridge so it mutes the strings just a little and as I move to the high E my wrist sort of pivots and rests on the same spot. As for your fingers sounding like you are doing pull offs I don't really know what to say to that. Mabye it is to much reverb or something like that.

I get that "pull of" sound and a lot of other unwanted noise if I use the bridge pickup on my (severely beaten up) crapocaster. Maybe try messing with your settings to see if you can reduce it some.
Some say you can use a sock or a hair scrunchie instead of buying the string dampener - seems very doubtful that it would be as good but you could give it a try.

i just got the speed kills dvd...and in the dvd, mike says that instead of muting the other strings with his picking hand...he mute the strings with his fretting hand. when he did it on the dvd...it looked like whenever he fretted a note, he muted the string above it and below with the same finger that's fretting the string. im wondering, how do you do that? because i tried it, but i couldn't get it to mute both the string above it and below it.

Just use less gain and remover your fingers one at a time which stops the ringing!
