Michael, how do you start off writing a song? Do you start with the backing and work on the lead or have an idea for a lead section and base the rhythem around it or something like that? I usualy start with a backing unless I have something planed for the lead.

I do it that way occasionally, but most of the time an idea for a whole song might come to me, or I'll be jamming/practicing and stuff starts to form.

i usually start with a base rythme. i've written some where i start with a drum beat. my favorite songs are actually like a duet between the rythme and lead, in other words the rythme is not constant. thats usually a soloing section though and isn't really a song, i guess its sort of a musical brainstorm, i love em' though. but 90% of the time i start with the rythme guitar

Well, I usually choose the key and style, then I jam until I find a cool chord progression, after that I write the lyrics and finally I invent the solos that match the concept.

You people use the outdated way of music. Let me introduce you to the 21 century of advanced computer programsn where you punch what you want it. I've written more songs than anyone I know this way and they are perfect to me ear and very well constructed and it's easier this way. Let me say this I can't come up with jack crap on my guitar because nothing sounds the way I want it and in standard it just ***s because it sounds to bright and I want it to sound different and NOT know what it will sound like. And when I put this stuff in and than push play it sounds totally different and I can find when something sounds good a million times easier =p FORGET YOUR OLD WAYS IT WON'T MOVE YOU FAR because this way you write for all instruments and you write faster.
Sorry if that was confusing I wasn't sure how to put it.

Well the computer plays it for you, that makes it easy. If you play it on your guitar an it sounds diffrent you must be doing something wrong. Also everyone write's songs in diffrent ways there is no "correct" way.

Dude I can play whatever I write easily I just hate the way things come out (The Tone And It Doesn't Sound Complete sence I am a highly demanding musician)and than when I play what I wrote on the comp than I realize how awsome it sounds.

Weird, I've done stuff like this on the comp, but when I played it it sounded right. Perhaps I don't fully understand what you mean.

I do all my work on the computer and it's easy for me sence I know what every note sounds like due to me memorzing every sound of the fret board =P probally more due to me using the comp so much hahaha. I think I would use the comp less if I was in a band with EXPERIENCE and HIGHLY FINACED musicians and had the right tones and equip.

That's not what I said, what I play sounds just like what I hear on the computer, you were saying otherwise.

You make it so hard to be nice to you, sometimes I really don't want to get in a huge arguement with you so I'll just say this, and be done with it. What do you think they did before computers?? I am merely taking advantage of future technologies And second before you go judging who you are better then and will or will not play with.I think you should get some experience yourself. You talk as if you know and are all, when it comes to guitar and music. Hey I only mention about what I do know and I was just talking about how I refuse to play with under experienced or under finaced musicians because they're not work-able material. As I wrote out exclusively in my last band even one was under-finaced except me which made it hell cause I had to pay for everything and it made the band impossible to work with.I need good equipment and all the tones possible and I don't like putting out poor quality music so I will not work with someone who cannot keep up or cannot afford to keep up thats all Granted you seem like a very nice guy!!! I really try not to be offensive and I don't think I'm a bad person but I put things in the wrong perspective sometimes and have apologized repeatdly and will continue to do so and I have nothing against anyone on this forum because your all great! But for some reason I think your head is swollen a bit. Sorry man, but someone had to say it!!! I think you are nice, don't get me wrong!!!! But if this is how you are trying to make friends or feel important you are going about it all wrong. I really don't think of myself as much of a musician and I will arguee extremly to make sure someone is getting proper information as the topic was on the Jazz III Picks, on a topic like this I won't because although I think it would benefit alot of people we all have our own styles and ideas and yours counts importantly ;D If you knew my friend's you'd understand believe me I'd be willing to do ALOT for them and in person I really am fun and easy to get along with just this type of stuff gets my blood going hahaha UNLEASH THE FLIPPIN FURY! < I wanna be a hedge hog

Try writing lyrics and build your music around them. try to express your lyrics throught the music.
