So I finally got round to giving my squier strat some love, it's been in dire need of some tightened nuts for a long time but I've just been ignoring it instead of fixing it. The input socket was hanging out because the spacer had come off it and was loose inside the guitar, and it all needed tightening up. I fixed that, and since then when I play there is the most annoying noise I've ever heard, it's like something inside the guitar is vibrating. When I press on the tremelo mechanism it stops buzzing, but I don't know if this is actually what is causing the buzz or if it's something inside which is getting supressed when I press on the body. I can't understand why it would suddenly start doing it after I fixed the input socket, I don't see how they would be related, but I have no idea. Has anybody got any ideas on what I can do?

im gonna hazard a guess here cos i dont own a guitr witha tremelo but:
Is the whole trmelo bridge not luse and vibrating off the actual guitar body? that would explain how when you hold it the buzzing stops
If the tremelo is done by springs isn one of the springs not slightly loose?

It sounds like the tremelo arm is vibrating when you play... if it stops when you hold it then maybe its because you have the bar too loose in its socket. Tighten it and see what happens.

The bar isn't in, so I can rule that out. I don't think the whole unit is loose, but I'll need to take a closer look at it I guess. Thing is it didn't do it until I messed around with the socket, which confuses me mightily

does it buzz trough the amp ?and then you touch the arm or just the bridge it goes away or is it a vibration .if its #1 i would say some kind of ground problem. #2 it could be the trem springs easy fix is to stick thin peices of foam under the springs or did you tighten the pivit screws to tight? then you would back them off a little i hope this gives you some insight . succubus

It's not through the amp, it's a very loud buzz from inside the guitar itself. I didn't touch the pivot screws so I don't think that's it, but I will have a go with the foam. Thanks

I put the trem arm in and gave it a wiggle, and the buzzing has stopped again. So something must be loose somewhere but for now it's sorted itself out, so I took the arm back out and am leaving the whole mechanism alone. Thanks again for the suggestions guys

it is problably a ground wire got unsoldered from input jack or if you check the back of the guitar where the springs of the vibrato get attached there is suppose to be a wire also soldered to it for ground check if all the wires are soldered to the input jack and also the wire that has to be soldered to the metal plate where the spring are attached HTH, OTHERWISE IF YOU CAN PUT A PIX OF THE INPUT JACK AND THE BACK OF THE GUITAR WHERE THE CAVITY WHERE THE SPRINGS ARE WILL BE GOOD IDEA MAKE SURE TO GET A VERY CLOSE VIEW.

I have to do some work on it, the tone pots don't work at all. I think the wires have come unsoldered. Maybe I'll find out what's really up with the trem when I go in to fix those. If there's anything I can't work out when I go in I'll post pics

Ally, take off the back plate on the guitar and see if any of the springs for the trem system are loose or unhinged. if so it would explain the lack of buzzing when you hold the bar perhaps. just a thought..

I will have a look for that when I'm digging around at the electronics, thanks Rob
