For me it would have to be one of these amp: Mesa boogie: Road king, Triaxis/2290, Mark 4 and mark 2 c+ Engl: Powerball, Savage 120, engl preamp( e-350 or whatever they are called) Diezel: Vh4 and Herbert.
of all of these above i would probably choose either the Road King or the Vh4.

Peaveys, Mesas and Marshalls - they're all great, you can actually get the sound of any amp just by playing around with controls.

And noone mentioned Soldano, VHT or Bhudda. Or Hughes & Kettner. Or HiWatt. Or.... there are so many great amps out there for any taste or wallet. I just bought a NOS Lee Jackson amp, it's more or less a modded JCM800 and it rocks.

Some other good amps are krank, koch, genz benz, orange, and bad cat. There are many other great amp companies out there. But time and time again you'll hear people say that's it more about the hands than the amp, and it's true. Many amps are better at some things than other, but it's all personal preference. I've never been able to get a tone I like out of a peavey, but that doesn't mean it's perfect for someone else. I personally like the vintage orange OD120's, they're absolutlly killer, and my style to a T. But that doesn't mean i'll sound great through it, it'll only shine up what I give it, and you can't make crap smell like pizza. I played a KILLER bogner "uberschall" that was amazing, one VERY versitile metal guitar, much on the same level as a soldano but with much more gain. Every knob makes noticible difference night and day every twitch you turn, the sign of a truly great amp. Another thing that expensive amps tend to do much better than cheepo amps is touch. Every play a trainwreck? Those amps can go from overdriven clean to searing rock crunch just by how you play, not touching a single setting. For people who need big dynamic changes this is a must, becuase channel switching can be clumsy and can create to harsh of a volume/tone difference. Plug in a marshall and cranck all knobs and put the master at 12 oclock, pluck a string soft then JAM down a power chord, and you'll see what i mean. See if you can get a solid state amp to do that. (other than hybrid and/or modeling amps)
But like i said before, it's all personal preference.

:cough cough: spiders *** :cough cough:
Well, that's my opinion at least. I've used Line 6 spiders, flextones, HD's, Duoverbs, Vetta and Vetta ll's and not to mention the pods. And what have i learned?
Line6 has awsome marketing. They want you to fall in love with the spider buy it, get used to the tone and then play a flextone and then fall in love with that and so on. I'm not complaining, really. I own a flextone 2 and it kicks butt. I want to buy a vetta 2 someday. The matter of the fact is though is that with line 6 you get what you pay for, and the spider series is thier cheepest. And please don't say they're the highest gain amps they have, because it's not true. The flextone series offers probly the widest range of setups with a great tone/$ ratio, but thier tone still doesn't touch the vettas. Although I actually REALLY licked the new budget $199 spiders. Those things have much better tone than anything in the price range and offeres versatility that still puts to shame most solid state amps in existance.
Personally, I think line6 is almost nirvana for live, because I have yet to see a tube amp with MASSIVE versatility that have midi contoled presets that you can change to in the blink of an eye. For recording i'd take a good tube amp any day though. I could deal with a line 6 just fine, just prefer real tube.
On another note, about the Satch Peavy head the JSX... I didn't really like it. I played it when it first came out and I thought it sounded like a cheep amp. The high gain settings aren't really focused at all and have almost no musical quality to it. And they have practically no "touch" responce. The magazines review products considering the price of the unit and the competitors it's against, in wich case the peavy is a good buy. I won't say it's a bad amp, but I'd much rather put 1200 bucks down on Bad Cat, or maybe a 2061X 20Watt reissue Marshall. There are many other amps i'd take over the peavy just out of personal preference. I guess I just like complaining about amps I feel sub par that so many people love. But hey, if you like it and your fans like that's all that matters right?

The best amp i've heard for my personal tastes is a Mesa/Boogie dual rectifier, but i can't even dream of ever being able to afford one. Then again, i haven't heard a very large variety of amps, just the standard marshalls, mesas, peaveys and such. The Peavey JSX is a very nice amp.
On my Crate i love the distorted channel as a lead channel, but for rhythm it just doesn't cut it so i run a Boss Metal Zone and/or Boss Mega Distortion.

I've heard great things even about budget Crates, but I really don't see the appeal of Mesas. To me they sound simply unmatched for rhythm, there's no other amp like it, but for lead I think they sound really thin and pissy compared to Marshalls

It's so hard to find an amp that suits great for both rhythm and lead - the dual rectifier is better for rhythm, but i still think it can punch out some good lead tones.
