i just tie a sock around the neck when i want to dampen the strings. I dont like to do it too much though, because its too much like cheating for my liking

I got the idea from Fat Mr Crab in his video Born 2 Shred II, and I'm assuming he got the idea from Michael. I use it to clean up my sound when I'm practicing arpeggios, since I cant do them that good yet, it makes it sound a lot better

i usually slide some paper under the strings, has to be the right amount otherwise youre tuning goes out, obviosuly. I intend to by a string dampener at some point or other for my touchstyle playing.

I have one but don't really use it enless I am tapping. I think that useing it for arpeggios is cheating. Adam

there isnt much to it. around the neck, where the nut is, wrap a sock around it so it goes over all the strings, then tie the two ends together so it stays fairly tight (but not so tight it actually frets any notes)

^I would post a pic of how I do it, but I cant figure out how to post pics on here. Just take a small piece of cloth, like a face cloth, and tie it around the neck at the 2nd fret. I usually tie it pretty tight. Theres really not an easier way to explain it than that. Ill post a pic if I can figure out how, or maybe someone can tell me how to post a pic that ive saved to My Documents?

Yeah, but dampening the strings isn't meant for when you want to play the strings open.

Type "picture hosting" in on google or something and there are alot of sites that will host it. Adam

its tied around the neck around the first or second fret the same way you would fasten a watch or bracelet around your wrists. The whole point of it is so that the open strings do NOT sound.

i actually tied a sock around the the first half of the 1st fret. it gets rid of background noise some. and you can play open E. but not as effective as the secongd fret heh.
