Okay, if you have read well all thread then you know I am moving. I am concidering getting broadband hooked up for my computer. Can someone explain what that process might be in lay mans terms? What happens if cable goes out? Will I have to get a new tower? If I buy what ever it takes to do broadband, what is it and how will it effect my computer??

Broadband doesn't mean you have a cable modem, I have DSL and I still use my phone line.

Well, I don't think your computer is at more risk than it is normally with dial-up, If the cable goes out obviously you won't have internet until it's back up, but your computer should be fine, I wouldn't worry.

Your computer connects to Your cablemodem, DSLrouter or whatever through a network cable and Your cablemodem or whatever connects to Your Cable outlet (an adapter might be needed) through an antennacable.

Cable is much better than Dial-Up, it won't speed up your computer, it'll allow for faster downloading and such. Basically I contacted the people over here who are the broadband/cable modem provider, they brought over the modem, hooked it up, did all this crap, I just sat in the chair and played guitar. ;D I dunno if that helps, I tried, sorry.

It is complicated at first, after a while you do get used to it. A modem has no disc player , all it really does is allows to access the internet. That's its basic function, and cable doesn't interfere with your phone line so you can go online and use the phone!

The only way your comp will go faster is by updating it, a modem doesn't change anything.

This computer really isn't that old. That's what I don't get. Granted it was used when I bought it but it is only three years old? The disk drive doesn't work either. I hope it can be fixed!! I really am not in the spot to be buying another computer right now. I would rather use my money for good equip!!!

You can get a DVD writer (disk drive) for about $40 now probably. Also an easier to understand description of a modem is a box you dont need to touch.

a cable modem is a device that sits between your computer and the cable connection. basically, you connect your computer to the modem and the modem connects to the cable line. if you have it installed , the installer will set it all up for you. as far as what broadband is....just think of it as a pipeline, with a dial up connection you have a very small pipe that only a lil can fit through at a time. with broadband you have a HUGE pipe that allows alot to flow through. so if someone posts a video on here and it takes an hour or two with dial up, it would take a few seconds with broadband. it does not speed up your computer per se, but it will speed up the internet, like web pages will load extremely fast, and downloads will be very quick. when i changed from dial up to broadband it was amazing, i could never go back to dial up again.
