Dead link. Take out the period. If this is what you're playing at 13 you have a lot going for you, keep up the practicing. Musically it isn't my thing really, but you've got some talent definately.

Dude, you haven't been playing for 11 years I'm sorry. You would have had to start at 2 years old. Look at how big a guitar is, and then look at a 2 year old. You wouldn't even be able to hold the damn thing let alone be developed enough to learn anything anyone teaches you. Just because you may have owned one because your parents wanted you to eventually learn, doesn't mean you have been playing since 2. All you can do is randomly hit the notes and giggle at the sound they make. I dare you to find a kid that age and give them a guitar and make them actually learn something. They can barely talk let alone be able to even write at that age. I think you should change the 11 to something a little more believable if you want ppl to take you seriously.

Now, I didn't start how you would think. I started on www.dolphinmusic.co.uk/shop_image/product/87818cedde6b94b0ceceed9f0cc0a50b.jpg one of these and I would tune it to chords. Not playing in the normal sense but playing none the less. Don't rag on someone just 'cause you don't believe what they are saying.

Guthrie started playing when he was 3. Just sayin'. Not saying you are wrong, but considering how small a person he is now, i doubt he would've been able to actually "play" ANY size guitar (available to buy) @ 3 years old. A custom made one then sure, but I remember looking for a guitar to buy a cousin of mine (who was huge for 4 due to his Dad's genes) and the smallest guitars around were still pretty big. Not saying that Govan didn't strum a guitar or something @ 3, but actually play a guitar? No chance.

"Play" as in how he does now- fretting notes in tune, bending to pitch etc. Allround technical control.
My brother can strum a guitar tuned to a chord all day long- that doesn't constitute being able to play the instrument, surely?
Absolutely no kid can put his/her hand on the neck and reach around to place their fingers on the fretboard until at least 5 years old (on a production guitar) & even that is dependant on their size.

FWIW, I was playing chords by 4 [about 2 months before I turned 5]

You never said open chords (even though no kid of 3 could fret any notes), you said tuned to an open chord meaning the guitar which doesn't constitute playing.
As for writing using open chords, it depends. Many composers don't actually play an instrument so you can't equate "writing" with "playing" since they don't go hand-in-hand.
But if you were playing open chords (i take it you mean a succession of chords?) as opposed to just strumming your guitar's open strings (which were tuned to a chord) then yes you'd technically be playing (or rather- starting to learn how to play, since i doubt it'd be in tune) although you'd be hard pressed to find many quality players who would say someone who is limited to open chords is really a player who has control over the instrument.
Composing is a different matter, you can *** at playing but be a great composer.

Ok, well let me be more specific about what I consider playing. I doubt at 3 you could actually learn to play a piece of music, even some of the simple ones. You would have to be the smartest 3 year old ever IMO. At 3 you are going to have really small hands, and it's just going to be too difficult imo.
I just feel if you haven't even gone to kindergarten yet, I don't consider you capable of "playing" the instrument. Especially if all you are doing is strumming open chords. I would say when you started being able to learn how to play songs like "Twinkle Twinkle", "Greensleeves" or whatever other songs you wanted to learn, is when you actually started playing.

There are cases of 3 year olds who can play simple songs on most instruments... I think you guys are arguing semantics way to much in this case. I'm not interested in exactly what he could play at 3... I'm more interested in what he can/can't play today, after having been working on music (however the case may have been) for so many years and from such a young age. btw... I saw a 4 year old play a BACH piece (C minor partita) to an extremely high level... I mean PRO level playing and phrasing. Some people just have it, for some people it's easy.
*Though kingofloudness probably doesn't fall under such a category, and maybe is just someone who started early... it doesn't equate to a super high level of playing in itself. Just can lend itself to being an advantage in the long run to have started so early.

How do you know that person was actually 4?
I mean the physical elements, not the musical. Mozart composed symphonies @ 8 years old so i'm not saying it's impossible musically, but physically i haven't seen anyone of 4 years old who can actually put their hand around ANY sized guitar & as i said, my cousin was huge for 4 years old.
There are many cases of a kid being portrayed as younger by the parents if the kid has an obvious talent to get more of an awe-inspiring effect "Oh my god, this kid is only 8!!!" when in fact he's about 12 and has been MADE to play.
Anyways, if anyone says somoene who is limited to open chords has any type of control over the instrument (which is how EVERYONE starts off guitar- being limited) then they are talking BS, plain and simple.

True, he could have been 8 or 10... who knows... I was told 4 and I'm naive. The playing was still absurd... carbon copy of gould's lively touch. Maybe the kid wont be a great artist in the future, but, it was really incredible. How do you know that person was actually 4? I mean the physical elements, not the musical. Lol, you're not naive. In England, there have been cases (which my Physical Education teacher told me about) where parents have doctored birth certificates (i don't know HOW they've done it mind you) to make it seem as though a boy who is an above average or even very good 12 year old footballer is actually 9 (which as a general rule is when clubs look at kids to sign).
Obsessively pushy parents are really sick in the head, and they do things like this.
Whether the kid you're talkjing about is 4 or 10, if he can play a Bach piece to a level where you were impressed then it's all academic- he has/had a prodigious talent. 6 years possible difference in age when the kid isn't anywhere near a teenager means little so he obviously has a gift.
The only the point i was making that really "playing" guitar (such as successive chords, fretting single notes, bending etc) really requires the person to have hands of a certain size. The average 3-year old will simply not hand hands big enough to play a controlled line on any sized guitar which is commercially available.
"KingLoudness" may've had hands the size of the average 7-year old or something when he started playing chords @ 5 years old +/- and he may be 6' tall now. I was always much bigger than everyone in my class & pretty much everyone i met outside of school until i was 15 when i pretty much stopped growing so this could be the case with him too, although i still don't think being limited to open chords constitutes the ability to play guitar, that's another debate though.

i think what some people are missing is that he said he started playing guitar at 3.. that doesnt nesecerally mean he could play at that age just that he had begun learning then.. so he probably didnt have much control over the instrument and probably couldnt play much but he was probably learning

Exactly... go up to someone who has been playing for 5 months... ask them to play. They won't have great control, but, what are you going to say? YOU HAVEN'T STARTED PLAYING YET, lol? i think what some people are missing is that he said he started playing guitar at 3.. that doesnt nesecerally mean he could play at that age just that he had begun learning then.. so he probably didnt have much control over the instrument and probably couldnt play much but he was probably learning

That's not the same thing as strumming the open strings of a guitar which is tuned to an open chord without fretting a note & saying "i can play". That isn't playing a guitar cos anyone can do it. Fretting notes while playing open chords & changing chords etc IS playing, but KingLoudnees admitted he didn't do that til 5. I seriously doubt he could switch between chords @ 5 on any sized guitar unless his hands were the size of someone 2 years older than him.
