I think its silly to think his drug habit was only part of his "pain", he was a junky more or less... its unfortunate, but true. Wow i hadnt heard about his drug taking? ALL drugs are addicitve, even the like of Paracetomol and stuff can be addictive. Id never heard this about Shawn, such a shame, but who knows what you owuld do if you were in that much pain?

But wouldn't you concede that the chances of Shawn becoming a junkie would've been less had he not had a painful medical condition, Rob?
People don't start taking morphine for no reason, usually it's used by junkies coming off of heroin or other seriously hard drugs (in rehabilitation programs, by police when they're questioning junkies etc) or by those who get so much relief from a painful condition that they become dependent on it.
I don't think any of us can slate him.

I understand what you are saying, however, I'm of the impression that Shawn's drug use went beyond his physical problem. I'm also not convinced the only drugs he did were pot... and then morphine. But, I rather not go into this... But wouldn't you concede that the chances of Shawn becoming a junkie would've been less had he not had a painful medical condition, Rob? I understand what you are saying, however, I'm of the impression that Shawn's drug use went beyond his physical problem. I'm sure Mike wouldn't like people talking about his personal lifew in public like that. I'm also not convinced the only drugs he did were pot... and then morphine. But, I rather not go into this... Not a very cool thing to say about a 'known' individual, unless you know exactly what you're talking about, direct from someone who actually knew Shawn.....and not just " hear say". Before Shawn's pain from Arthritus, he never touched Morphine.... that came later. One thing i will say though, is that.... though he kept it to himself, Shawn never really fully recovered from the break up of his marriage, when he discovered that one of his oldest, best friends (an old Bandmate) was having an affair with his wife.

It's not about "cool" or not... its about reality. Unfortunately, Shawn had various problems through out his life, alot of which he caused for himself or did not address as he should have (which is a shame). And, I would consider that bringing up the end of his marriage and its reasons (which I also knew of), to be even MORE of a sensitive matter. Lastly, you KNOW you are kidding yourself if you imply that his morphine addiction was merely for his pain. Maybe the starting reason was, after he stated that he could no longer use cortisone, but... things get more complicated after that. I get upset at people defending Shawn too much on these issues, he practically killed himself at 40... the guy was really special, and he could not hold on to that, he lost grip on life. I admire alot about him, and the things he could do, the things he could play, the things he had to say and so forth. But, I also DONT admire the other factors which contributed to his death, like the smoking (chain smoking), drug use (whichever drugs that may be in the end), and his weight (which, awhile his health problems created this problem, I am SURE he could have attempted to do more against.) If you think I'm being too harsh, consider how much I admired him, and secondly, consider how many people with arthritic psoriasis die at 40... that is to imply, not alot. So, don't just blame everything on outside factors, hold people also accountable for their mistakes. And in this case, I think its very realistic to mourn the fact that Shawn contributed ALOT to his own problems and his early death. No amount of hero worship would allow me to see it any other way, I tried as well. Actually i agree with most of what you say, so long as it is hard fact. What i was actually referring to was this part, which seemed too much like speculation.... I'm also not convinced the only drugs he did were pot... and then morphine. Anyway...... it's kinda annoying how this thread got so off topic, into negative territory. There's no "need" for it.

i would like to say one thing before i get back to topic, i had to have my wisdom teeth taken out, as most people do, and i had complications, i had to have a small portion of my jaw bone removed and i was in terrible pain for about 2 weeks...during this time i was on oxycodone (a derivative of morphine) since all the weaker pain medications did nothing for the pain; i can see how it would be very easy to become Dependant on medications such as this to alleviate pain but to get back on subject i think my favorite guitar shawn played was the yellow charvel; ive also really been intrested in the surfretter for a while now, im in the process of making something similar
