Have you ever rolled the dice and purchased a CD on a whim, blind guess, or educated guess, and it turned out to be awesome? Please name the CD, the artist, and the reason you chose it.

My big 2:
1. Star One "Live From Earth Below"- I bought it cuz I liked Damian Wilson and Russell Allen's singing and was blown away by the vocals, riffs, keyboards, the female back-up singers.
2. Ring of Fire "Burning Live in Tokyo 2002"- My brother-in-law told me about a guitarist named Tony MacAlpine. I love buying a live album when I know nothing about an artist and when I heard Mark Boals vocals, Vitalij Kuprij on keyboards, the riffs, the sweeps, etc... well, then I started buying Tony MacAlpine's solo stuff, instructionals, and then Vitalij's solo stuff.

The first one was Metallica's "Ride the Lightning" when I was 8 years old. I liked the cover. The rest is history.
The second was "Karma" from Kamelot. The cover was awesome and I never heard of them before and they looked interesting. They are now in my top 5 favorite bands.

I'm going to go with "The Triumph of Steel" by Manowar. I thought the title was cool and it was my first of many Manowar albums. It has "Agony and Ecstasy in 8 Parts" which is like a 28 minute song as the first track. David Shankle is the guitarist on it and it has some of there best tunes like, "Metal Warriors", "Ride the Dragon", and "Power of My Sword".
2nd to that would be "Louder Than Hell" again by Manowar. Every song kicks ass, plus it was released in 1996, which was a pretty poor time for music IMO.

Stream of Passion - Embrace the Storm
Therion - Sirius B
And Zombie Girl - Blood, Brains and Rock 'N' Roll
All good stuff that I'm still addicted to. ;D

He's gonna flip-out when he sees that. Hell On Earth 5 DVD comes out 11/27! I can't wait. More craziness I'm sure...

Yes, I bought Arena's Immortal? just because I thought the cover art was cool. Turns out that the music was right up my alley, and it quickly became one of my favourite albums.

when I was 6-7 I made my grandma buy Show No Mercy by slayer. The cover is sweet, and the inside jacket was even better.

Not really a whim since I read so many reviews of the album saying it was great etc, but Allan Holdsworth's "I.O.U" was one that reallly hit me.
I hadn't heard Allan's music before and needless to say it was completely different from any guitar music I had heard previously (this was also pre-McLaughlin, Lane, Gambale, Henderson etc).
It's as good as many guitarist's "Best Of..." albums. Insane stuff, and not even Allan's best!

I've been hesitant about getting anything after Embrace the Storm due to the lack of Ms. Linstruth. I'll definitely give it a listen though!

yeah both arjen and lori have been replaced but no offence to either but it was a good thing
i know both of them, arjen developed a loss of sense of taste (as in eating) and was physically drained a lot, he took a lot of time out, lost his home through a breakup and had to relocate
lori got pretty ill and she was so drained she couldnt get outta bed some days, leaving both warbride and SOP was a good idea
now to the band replacements, arjens rhythm tone was better and tighter, the new guy his heavier but it fizzes a lot
the new lead player has lori's vein and is actually better, sorry lori
the new keyboardist is sick, incredible playing

I bought George Bellas "Turn of the Millennium" cd just because the cover was so cool. I of course loved it. I was already a big fan of Ring of Fire's "Burning Live in Tokyo 2002" cd but didn't own any of their studio cd's. When I finally did, I'm like, "Whoa, there's George Bellas!"

I heard that a guitarist by the name of Paul Gilbert was fast so I decided to look for a live album (I always look for a live album rather than a greatest hits album when I know nothing about an artist). I stumbled upon Racer X Live: Extreme Volume 1. It's my all-time favorite cd...

Check this out, I was looking for progressive metal bands and noticed own called Symphony X. I thought the name was so cool, lol, that they had to be good. I bought the double live cd Live on the Edge of Forever. It's probably in my top 5 cd's of all-time.

That album friggin' blew me away. GREAT band. Can't wait for their new stuff through Nuclear Blast.

About the only one I can really think of that I never heard at least a song or two on MTV before buying it is Yngwie Malmsteen's Trilogy. That album's cover was awesome and I was just looking for something to draw and happened across that album. I thought records usually had at least decent concepts for covers so an album cover would at least give me an idea of something to draw. Yngwies album cover was so awesome I just had to have it. I put it in my cassette player just to listen as I was working on drawing out the cover.. I didn't see a need to change anything on it. After listening to the album just once I decided I had to be a guitar player. Before that I really wanted to play drums, but couldn't cause of the noise... His Neoclassical style just blew me away.

Oh yeah, I also want to include "ThunderSteel" by RIOT.
I heard someone talking about it in an interview and ordered it. One of my fav albums now. I can listen to it on repeat and never get tired of it. It's my favorite thing to listen to when I'm driving.

I buy most of my cds on a whim. Sometimes because of the album art or the name of the band. The best one so far was Sikth, I saw the cover of their Death of a Dead day album and knew I had to have it. And they are now my favourite band.

I remember reading that Yngwie was the world's fastest guitarist. Of course, that is subject to debate, but that claim alone got me interested (At the time, I was young and thought the fastest guitarist ever was EVH!) I used my "live album formula" and bought "Trial by Fire-Live in Leningrad." I was completely blown away. That was the first shredder cd I ever listened to and the start of my obsession with shredders ever since.

It just all fits together well. I like the lyrics, the sound, the general vibe. It's early Speed Metal / Power Metal. Lyrics like "He rules the wind, on titanium wings!".
