The over/under thing has no musacal value, but a great great performance value.

Yeah, the over/under was invented by Michael and is purely for live preformances.

In regards to the question "Does Michael play bass"? Yes, Michael can play bass guitar. I don't think there is an instrument out there he can't play. He is an amazing musician who is well rounded in all instruments and genres of music. You do not have to be a shredder or even a guitar player to learn something from Michael!

Yeah, I kinda expected that Michael played bass-guitar. Everybody played some other instruments besides default one. (I don't know if that's the right word) But I would like his words about experience of playing it, and all... Just like I asked in these questions: -Michael, do you play a bass-guitar sometimes? -Which bass do you think is the best? -How do you feel about playing bass? Does thicker strings bother you? When Mike will be able to come to the forum, I hope that he'll answer to these questions. I'm quite interesred.

Well James, I am sure that there are 1 or 2 people out there that are not keen on Van Halenesque fretboard tapping either. Fact is that Michael invented the technique and is the only one that I have ever seen pull it off and sound great! You might want to visit one of his clinics some day, he does an incredible job of demonstrating how it's done!

tricks are not useless, watching someboy playing guitar for 1 hour without any kind of tricks would be boring for lot of people. Been a guittarist is not just playing a guitar, it might be fun for you, but if you dont do nothing and just play guitar, the people wouldnt come to your shows, becose they know that your gonna do the same things as in your CD's I'd love to be able to do the under/over, i just can do it at 40bmp The under/over sounds cool ;D

Jimi Hendrix (as well as Yngwie and others) put his guitars on fire, wich is not only a gimmick it's also ruining a great instrument, many of us cuold never afford. Others have smashed their guitar through speaker cabs. The who tor up the whole stage. MAB does the over/under and plays the double axe. I prefer the MAB way.
When I see a band live, I want action. Not just four (less or more) guys standing on the stage, playing their stuff and leave. I could sit at home listening to their CD instead. When I pay for a ticket I pay for a show. It's gotta be music, light, smoke, theater, one big performance. I wanna go home saying, That was one H*ll of a show!!!

The reason Mike is "being branded" as the inventor of the over/under technique is the it's one of the things people associates him with, and it also shows how fast he is, wich is another thing he's associated with. A part of his over/under technique is also, that he plays fluidly with his fretboard hand over the neck, both right handed, lefthanded and crisscrossing both way. BTW feel free to attend all the jazzconcert You like, but I proberbly won't join You, it would bore me to death. No matter how great their playing, songs and their 30 minutes impros are. Just not my thing I guess

I consulted the dictionary: Gimmicknoun. a trick (under/over) or device (quad guitar) to attract attention. As you can tell, I added the gimmicks Michael is guilty of. Once again, I do like Michael's music, but I think we all can improve with a bit of criticism. I hope I sound as sincere, polite and constructive as possible. ... Love James XXX Your just being negative again. If it wasn't for tricks and other "circus tricks" as you like to call them then live preformances woul all be the same. You'd just see the guitarist standing thee doing nothing apart from playing.

That's great, noone likes those (I admit I had to look it up ;D), but if You stay is in the end up to Mike and Deb. The main problem is that You keep slagging Mike on his own forum. Turn down the charm, coz You also have some good posts and topics

I love his music.
I just think we can only improve with criticism...
I am being constructive aren't I? I just feel that it is a waste of time saying how great he is etc.
... Love James XXX

Mike is both his music and his showmanship aka gimmicks
So is Yngwie, Vai, Satch, Hendrix, Gilbert, Blackmore etc. etc. Even Curbain was a great poser ;D

I guess everybody has a style. Someone burns guitar, someone makes grimaces, someone brings people from the audience to drum with him (Mike Portnoy ), and someone does under/over sweeps. I don't think you can blame MAB for doing that kinda sweeps even if it's just to entertain the audience, 'cause whole concert is in a matter of fact, entertainment. Personally, I would come to any concert on which is the music and the band I like. And extra-showmaking wouldn't be neccesary for me. But someone likes it spiced, and if performer is willing to provide that pleasure to him, nobody has right to disparage it. BTW I was just wondering how the hell Mike can keep so calm and expressionless face when he's playing supernatural solos? Scaaary. ;D

I think mike is one of the best musicans of all time. Also is it his own think to make his over/under trick. Now another Why must are all different question to michael be in this topic? I ask for the musicmesse, the next ask for mike and basses and I don't get an answer. Is it not better to open for all questions different topics? BlondieI don't know how far is it from denmark to Frankfurt. Sorry. A tipp we have got 2 Frankfurts. The musicmesse is in Frankfurt am Main.
